About Halifax Tall Ships & Maritime Heritage Experience
Halifax has a long, proud tradition of welcoming tall ships to its waterfront β one of the world's great natural harbours and home to the iconic Tall Ships Quay. When historic sailing vessels do call on Halifax, dockside tours and maritime programming make the waterfront one of the best places in Canada to see these vessels up close.
Important: no large-scale Tall Ships festival is confirmed for Halifax in 2026. The most recent major tall-ship regatta in the city was the Rendez-vous Tall Ships Regatta in 2017. In 2026, the major tall-ship gathering is Sail Boston (July 11β16, 2026) β where Bluenose II is scheduled to appear β not Halifax. Individual tall ships still call on Halifax periodically; before planning a trip around them, check the Halifax Waterfront and Discover Halifax for any confirmed port visits.
The city keeps the tradition alive between major festivals through periodic tall ship port visits, the Tall Ship Silva's year-round harbour cruises, and events such as the annual Halifax International Fleet Week, which brings naval vessels from allied nations to the harbour. Together they turn the waterfront into a living showcase of maritime history throughout the summer season.
For the most spectacular maritime event on Halifax Harbour in 2026, don't miss SailGP Halifax (June 20-21) with 13 international F50 foiling catamarans racing at speeds over 100 km/h β the city's premier summer event on the water. Check with Port Halifax and Discover Halifax for updates on individual tall ship visits throughout the season.
Sail Boston 2026 β Nova Scotia: Extend Your Tall Ships Trip
The biggest tall ships gathering of 2026 is Sail Boston (July 11β16), part of America's Semiquincentennial celebration. Nova Scotia's own Bluenose II β the legendary Lunenburg schooner β is an invited ship, making this the perfect excuse to turn a Boston harbour visit into a full Maritime adventure.
β Boston β Nova Scotia: Two Easy Routes
By Sea: The CAT Ferry
Drive from Boston to Bar Harbor, Maine (~5 hrs), then board the CAT ferry to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (3.5 hrs, runs May 14βOct 14). Total travel: one day. CAT Ferry complete guide β
By Land: Drive the Maritimes
Boston β Maine β New Brunswick β Nova Scotia (~8β9 hrs driving). Cross the border at Calais, ME / St. Stephen, NB. No ferry needed β just your passport and a full tank.
β΅ See Bluenose II at Home in Lunenburg
After seeing Bluenose II at Sail Boston, visit her home port of Lunenburg β a UNESCO World Heritage Site just 1 hour from Halifax. The schooner was built here in 1921 and still sails from this historic waterfront. Take a 2-hour harbour cruise aboard Bluenose II herself, explore the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, and walk the same docks where the world's most famous fishing schooner was launched.
