About Shelburne

Shelburne boasts one of the best natural deep-water harbours in North America, and in 1783 it briefly became one of the largest British settlements on the continent when thousands of United Empire Loyalists landed here at the close of the American Revolution. Its remarkably intact 18th-century waterfront β€” a near-mile of restored wooden warehouses and sea-captains' homes along Dock Street β€” has stood in for colonial-era ports in multiple films, including the Book of Negroes miniseries shot on the original streets.

History

Founded on May 4, 1783 by a fleet of Loyalist ships carrying more than three thousand refugees from New York at the end of the American Revolution, Shelburne's population swelled past ten thousand within a year, briefly exceeding both Halifax and Montreal. The boom collapsed almost as quickly β€” most settlers drifted away to other parts of the Maritimes by the 1790s β€” but the wooden architecture of that founding decade survived, leaving the largest concentration of pre-1800 buildings in Canada as the town's defining legacy.
