Lunenburg Ocean Adventures
Lunenburg Ocean Adventures operates deep sea fishing, shark fishing, diving, and private charters from the historic Lunenburg waterfront aboard the vessel Islander VIII. Docked at 68 Bluenose Drive at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, the company runs half-day and full-day trips from Lunenburg harbour into the North Atlantic.
Deep Sea Fishing is a half-day trip (8:00 AMβ12:00 PM or 1:00β5:00 PM) sailing past the Lunenburg lighthouse and the sea caves at Ovens Natural Park. Bait, rods, and reels are provided β custom rods with Penn 309 level wind reels on 30 lb test line. Common catches include cod, mackerel, dogfish, haddock, halibut, pollock, and wolf fish. Dolphins, whales, and ocean sunfish are frequently spotted.
- Group/Public: $80+tax per adult, $65+tax per child (12 and under). Minimum 8 passengers (or pay equivalent). Maximum 20.
- Private: $1,300+tax for up to 15 people, $45+tax per additional person up to 20 max.
Shark Fishing is a full-day trip targeting Blue, Mako, and Porbeagle sharks. The boat departs at 8:00 AM for the 90-minute run to the fishing grounds. All bait and heavy tackle provided (Penn Senator rods with 130 reels on 120 lb Dacron). Hook and release is required by law unless during a tournament. $2,500+tax, maximum 6 people. Book on demand β contact the company directly.
Diving charters visit the HMCS Saguenay, a 366-foot Canadian destroyer sunk in 1994 in Lunenburg Bay (resting on her starboard side in 95 feet of water, 25 minutes from the wharf). Seals are commonly seen during dives. Local dive shops (Torpedo Rays, Divers World, East Coast Scuba) organize group trips and charter Islander VIII as their platform. Private dive charters follow half-day charter rates and include time for two dives.
Private Charters β Islander VIII is available for corporate events, weddings, reunions, and custom cruises. A popular scenic route runs from Lunenburg harbour to the Ovens Sea Caves, around Cross Island, and across the bay to the East Point Reef seal colony.
