Interactive Culinary Trail Planner
Nova Scotia's four Taste trails - Cheese, Chowder, Lobster, and Good Cheer - in one planner. Pick your stops, get an ordered route with distances and times, and export it to Google Maps.
Nova Scotia runs four official culinary trails: the Cheese Trail, the Chowder Trail, the Lobster Trail, and the Good Cheer Trail of wineries, breweries, and distilleries. Until now you had to plan each one separately. This tool merges all 65 curated stops into a single map: toggle the trails you care about, check off stops, and the planner builds your food road trip in the smartest driving order.

How to Use the Culinary Trail Planner
- Toggle your trails. All four are on by default - turn off the ones you are not interested in and the stop list and map follow instantly.
- Filter by region or type. Planning a Valley wine weekend? Filter to Annapolis Valley. Only here for cheese and chowder? Filter by stop type.
- Check off stops. The planner orders every selection into the shortest sensible driving route from your starting point - Halifax by default, or any stop on the list.
- Read your summary. The route bar totals distance, driving time at ~65 km/h, and 45 minutes of tasting time per stop.
- Take it with you. Copy a share link that rebuilds your exact selection, print the route, or open it in Google Maps for turn-by-turn directions.
Pairing the Trails With Your Trip
The four trails overlap geographically, which is the quiet genius of Nova Scotia food travel: the Annapolis Valley packs cheesemakers, wineries, and chowder kitchens into one compact loop, while the South Shore chains lobster shacks and chowder pubs along the Lighthouse Route. Cape Breton pairs a single 24/7 cheese vending machine with a whisky distillery and the chowder shack at Neil's Harbour, right on the Cabot Trail. Wherever your itinerary starts, budgeting a realistic trip budget and sketching your overall driving route first makes the food stops fall into place.
Culinary Trail Planner FAQ
- How does the culinary trail planner work?
- Toggle the four Taste of Nova Scotia trails (Cheese, Chowder, Lobster, Good Cheer), filter by region or stop type, and check off the stops you want to visit. The planner sequences them into a sensible driving order from your starting point and shows distance, time, and a map route you can export to Google Maps. For background on each trail, see our culinary trails guide.
- Do I need a car to follow the culinary trails?
- Outside peninsular Halifax, yes. The trails span the whole province, from Bear River to the northern Cabot Trail, and interurban transit is limited. A Halifax brewery crawl like the one in our Good Cheer Trail guide is the one genuinely walkable exception. Our road trip planner helps with the driving logistics.
- When is the best time of year for the culinary trails?
- May through October, when wineries, farm gates, and seasonal seafood shacks are all open. Lobster seasons vary by zone - the South Shore fishery (LFA 33/34) runs late November to May 31 - while Saturday farmers' market cheese stands run most of the year. Late June to early October hits the widest overlap.
- Do I need a passport to visit Nova Scotia?
- International visitors, including US citizens arriving by land, sea, or air, need a valid passport. Canadian visitors need standard government ID. If you are arriving on The CAT ferry from Bar Harbor, bring your passport for the crossing regardless.
- Can I combine multiple trails in one trip?
- Yes - that is exactly what this planner is built for. Mix all four trails freely: a single Annapolis Valley day can pair Fox Hill Cheese House with three wineries and a chowder lunch, and the planner will order every mixed selection into one route.
- How accurate are the planner's distances and driving times?
- Distances are haversine estimates multiplied by a 1.3 road factor, and times assume about 65 km/h plus 45 minutes at each stop. They are planning aids accurate to roughly 15 percent - always confirm your final route in Google Maps before setting out.
- Does it cost anything to visit the trail stops?
- The trails themselves are free to follow - you simply drive to the stops. Tastings, tours, and meals vary: many cheesemakers offer free samples, winery tastings typically run a small fee, and lobster suppers are priced per plate.
