How to Plan a Nova Scotia Road Trip
A Nova Scotia road trip offers 7,500 km of coastline, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and some of Canada's best seafood. The key is matching your available time to the right regions β Cape Breton's Cabot Trail alone deserves 2-3 days.
Most visitors fly into Halifax and rent a car. From there, the South Shore (Lunenburg, Peggy's Cove) is 1-1.5 hours away, the Annapolis Valley is 1.5 hours, and Cape Breton is a 4-hour drive. The CAT high-speed ferry from Bar Harbor, Maine to Yarmouth offers an alternative entry from the US (MayβOctober).
Recommended Itinerary Durations
- 3-4 days: Halifax + South Shore (Lunenburg, Peggy's Cove) or Halifax + Annapolis Valley
- 5-7 days: Halifax, South Shore, and Cape Breton (Cabot Trail)
- 7-10 days: Full loop β Halifax, South Shore, Annapolis Valley, Bay of Fundy, Cape Breton
- 10-14 days: Comprehensive tour including Eastern Shore, Northumberland Shore, and multiple days in each region
