Quick Facts
About Antigonish
Antigonish is a lively highland town at the junction of the Northumberland Shore and the approach to Cape Breton, anchored by St. Francis Xavier University — consistently ranked among Canada's top undergraduate schools — whose limestone campus dominates the town's core. It bills itself as the 'New Scotland of Canada' and has hosted the Antigonish Highland Games every summer since 1863, the oldest continuously-running Highland Games in North America, drawing pipers, dancers, and caber-tossers from across the Gaelic world each July.
History
The area was long a Mi'kmaq gathering place before Acadian French and then British settlers arrived, and the town was formally established in the 1780s by Highland Scots immigrants, including the Catholic clergy who founded the stone St. Ninian's Cathedral in the mid-1800s. The founding of St. Francis Xavier University in 1853 by the diocese transformed Antigonish into the educational and cultural heart of mainland Gaelic Nova Scotia, and the later Coady International Institute spread its cooperative-movement philosophy to communities around the world.
