Skyline Trail Parking Reservation Guide
Timed parking is now required to hike Nova Scotia's most famous trail β here's how to book, what it costs, and what to do when it's sold out
The Cape Breton Highlands Skyline Trail is the most photographed hike in Atlantic Canada β a 6.5 km return stroll across a cliff-top boardwalk that ends at a headland overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It's also been loved nearly to death. Starting June 26, 2026, Parks Canada introduced a timed parking reservation system for the Skyline trailhead on French Mountain: show up without a booking and you cannot access the trail. The system runs through October 25, 2026, and no other Cabot Trail hike uses it. This guide explains exactly how the new system works, what it costs, how to book step by step, and what to do if your slot is sold out.
The New System at a Glance
June 26 β October 25, 2026
The reservation system is live for the entire 2026 hiking season. Outside these dates the Skyline lot operates normally.
No Reservation, No Access
The only exemption is travellers who have purchased the official guided Skyline Sunset Hike.

How the Timed-Parking System Works
The Skyline parking lot now releases vehicles in six daily timeslots, each a four-hour window capped at 50 vehicles. Once a slot is full it's full β there is no overflow lot and no waitlist at the gate. The change is a direct response to years of overcrowding: bumper-to-bumper parking, trampled headland vegetation, and wildlife disturbance at peak times. Spreading arrivals across the day protects the trail's fragile ecosystem and gives every visitor a better experience.
| Timeslot | Window | Vehicles | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8:00 AM β 12:00 PM | Morning | 50 | Wildlife & cool temps |
| 9:00 AM β 1:00 PM | Late morning | 50 | Easy going families |
| 12:00 PM β 4:00 PM | Midday | 50 | Cabot Trail road-trippers |
| 1:00 PM β 5:00 PM | Afternoon | 50 | Late risers |
| 4:00 PM β 8:00 PM | Evening | 50 | Golden hour photography |
| 5:00 PM β 9:00 PM | Sunset | 50 | Sunset on the headland |
All six slots run daily, June 26 β October 25, 2026. Each slot admits one vehicle.
Step-by-Step Booking
Reservations open through Parks Canada. Book online for the lowest fee, or by phone if you'd rather talk to a person. The system is shared, so popular slots can disappear within minutes of opening β have backup dates ready.
Pick your date and timeslot
Have two or three dates in mind before you open the system. The 5:00 PM sunset slot and weekend mornings sell out fastest, so flexibility is your friend.
Book online or by phone
Book online at https://parks.canada.ca/reservation-skyline for the lowest fee ($13), or call 1-877-737-3783 ($15). Creating a Parks Canada account in advance speeds up checkout when demand spikes.

Select Standard, Oversized/RV, or Accessible to match your vehicle. RV and accessible spaces are capped per slot, so lock yours in early.

Choosing Your Timeslot
The right slot depends on what you want from the hike β wildlife, solitude, or that famous headland sunset. Here's the honest trade-off for each window.
8:00 AM β 12:00 PM
Wildlife & cool tempsFirst on the trail β best chance for moose and other wildlife in the quiet early hours, and the boardwalk is at its least crowded.
9:00 AM β 1:00 PM
Easy going familiesComfortable arrival window after sunrise without the alarm clock. Good middle ground for families with a relaxed morning.
12:00 PM β 4:00 PM
Cabot Trail road-trippersFits a lunch stop on a Cabot Trail driving day. Warmest and busiest window β expect to share the headland viewpoint.
1:00 PM β 5:00 PM
Late risersA relaxed afternoon hike. The light is flat, but you can pair it with a ChΓ©ticamp dinner afterward.
4:00 PM β 8:00 PM
Golden hour photographyThe trail glows as the sun drops toward the Gulf of St. Lawrence. A favourite with photographers and photographers' luck.
5:00 PM β 9:00 PM
Sunset on the headlandThe payoff slot β the Skyline's boardwalk headland is one of Atlantic Canada's great sunset stages. Book early; it sells out first.
Cost Breakdown
Every reservation is one vehicle for one timeslot. The total splits into a parking fee and a non-refundable service fee β booking online saves you $2 per slot.
| Booking Channel | Total | Breakdown |
|---|---|---|
| Online (parks.canada.ca/reservation-skyline) | $13.00 | $9.50 parking + $3.50 service fee |

Canada Strong Pass (2026)
From June 19 to September 7, 2026, the Canada Strong Pass gives free admission to Cape Breton Highlands National Park β but the Skyline parking and reservation fees still apply. You save on park entry, not on the parking slot itself.
Oversized & Accessible Spaces
Each timeslot reserves 5 oversized/RV spaces and 4 accessible spaces. Accessible spaces require a valid accessible parking permit at check-in. Pricing is the same; supply is the constraint.
Commercial & Group Bookings
Tour operators and commercial groups book separately β call 1-902-224-2306 or email cbinfo@pc.gc.ca.
Arrival & Check-In
Check-in happens at the Skyline trailhead kiosk on French Mountain. Staff verify your reservation against your ID and license plate, then wave you into the lot. Come prepared β there's no cell signal to pull up a lost email.
Reservation confirmation
Printed or screenshotted. Don't rely on a live email at the trailhead β signal drops off on French Mountain.
Government photo ID
The name on your ID should match the reservation. Checked at the kiosk before you're waved through.
Vehicle license plate
Have your plate number ready β staff record it against your reservation at check-in.
Arrive on time
No earlier than 10 minutes before your slot, and check in within the first hour of your window. Late arrivals risk losing the spot.
ποΈ Hiking the highlands carries some risk on exposed boardwalks and cliff edges. before you head out.
Sold Out? The Best Alternatives
Don't let a full Skyline lot derail your Cabot Trail day. These nearby options need no parking reservation and still deliver highland drama.
Freshwater Lake & Auld's Cove trails
Still inside Cape Breton Highlands National Park, these quieter walks need no parking reservation and make a fine consolation when Skyline is full.
Other Cabot Trail hikes
Franey, Acadian, and Bog trails all deliver highland scenery without the timed-parking system. See our Cabot Trail guide for the full list.
Skyline Sunset Hike (guided)
Purchasers of the official guided Skyline Sunset Hike are the one exemption β they can access the trail without a standard parking reservation.

Key Rules to Know Before You Go
A few non-obvious rules trip up first-time visitors. Read these before you book.
- No reservation, no access. Only Skyline Sunset Hike purchasers are exempt.
- One parking slot per vehicle per day β no in-and-out privileges.
- Dogs are not permitted on the Skyline Trail, even with a reservation.
- Cancellations are accepted until 11:59 PM Atlantic time the day before; fees apply.

Skyline Parking β FAQ
- What happens if I show up at the Skyline Trail without a reservation?
- You will not be permitted to park or access the trailhead. The timed-parking system runs from June 26 to October 25, 2026, and the only exception is travellers who have purchased the official guided Skyline Sunset Hike. Book a timeslot online before you drive up.
- How much does a Skyline Trail parking reservation cost?
- $13.00 online ($9.50 parking + $3.50 service fee) or $15.00 by phone at 1-877-737-3783 ($9.50 parking + $5.50 service fee). Each timeslot admits one vehicle.
- Does the Canada Strong Pass cover the reservation fee?
- No. The 2026 Canada Strong Pass (June 19 β September 7) gives free park admission, but the Skyline parking fee and reservation service fee still apply. You save on park entry, not on the parking reservation itself.
- Can I bring my dog on the Skyline Trail?
- No. Dogs are not permitted on the Skyline Trail at any time, even with a valid parking reservation. This protects fragile headland habitat and wildlife. If you're travelling with a dog, choose a dog-friendly Cabot Trail hike instead.
- Can RVs and oversized vehicles book a slot?
- Yes, but each timeslot has only 5 oversized/RV spaces, so book well in advance. Oversized vehicles are those over 6 metres long. Select the Oversized/RV space type when you reserve.
- What if my preferred timeslot is sold out?
- Try a different date or a less-popular window (midday and late afternoon have more availability than sunrise and sunset). If the whole day is full, head to Freshwater Lake, Franey, or another Cabot Trail hike β none require a parking reservation.
- What should I bring to check-in?
- Your printed or screenshotted reservation confirmation, a government-issued photo ID, and your vehicle's license plate number. Arrive no earlier than 10 minutes before your slot and check in within the first hour of your window.
