Quick Facts
History & Description
Cape Negro Island Lighthouse watches over the approaches to Negro Harbour on Nova Scotia's South Shore. The present octagonal concrete tower, painted white with a red lantern, was built in 1915 and remains operational, standing 42 feet tall with its light 91 feet above the water.
A lighthouse has occupied this southeastern point of the island since 1872, when an earlier 29-foot wooden tower first served the harbour. That first structure was replaced by the current tower in 1915 and the station was eventually automated in 1993. Today only the lighthouse remains where a fish plant and small community once stood.
Accessible only by boat, the island light is part of the Lighthouse Route and sits offshore from Shelburne County. Its elevation above the surrounding waters makes it a prominent mark for vessels navigating the South Shore.
