Quick Facts
History & Description
The lighthouse is a timber combination dwelling and tower in an unusual "hunchbacked" shape. Built in 1855 following a petition from merchants and shipmasters of Queens County, it is one of the oldest lighthouses in Nova Scotia, commanding a historic site close to the middle of Liverpool.
Named after the fortified gun battery that protected the town from the 1760s to the 1860s, the point saw several actions during the American Revolution. It was also a signal station and an important public gathering place for the town, becoming a park in the late 1800s. The lighthouse has been restored and is now open to the public as part of the Fort Point Lighthouse Museum and Interpretive Park, operated by the Queens County Museum.
