Quick Facts
History & Description
The Port Mouton Lighthouse stands on the northeastern point of Spectacle Island, guiding boats into Port Mouton Harbour on Nova Scotia's South Shore. The present light is a square wooden tower about 28 feet tall, painted white with a white wooden lantern, still standing and operational. It is the second-generation tower on the site, replacing an earlier 1873 structure.
The original 1873 square wooden tower carried a fixed red light, later upgraded to a 4th order dioptric fixed white lens in 1922, and was served by a hand fog horn answered on signal from vessels. In 1937 the present tower took over, automated by 1993 and displaying a flashing white light. Spectacle Island sits just offshore from the village of Port Mouton along the Lighthouse Route, near some of the region's finest beaches.
