Quick Facts
History & Description
The Pomquet Island Lighthouse stands on the northeast end of Pomquet Island, off the Acadian village of Bayfield on St. George's Bay. It is a square wooden tower painted white, about 28 feet tall, displaying a fixed red light that has guided fishermen into the bay since it was first lit in 1868. The light is still standing and operational.
One of the older wooden lights on the Northumberland Shore, Pomquet Island showed a fixed red catadioptric lens by 1874 and was upgraded to a 5th order dioptric lens in 1922. It was automated by 1993, ending more than a century of tending. The island sits a short distance offshore and is reachable by boat or kayak from Bayfield, making it a rewarding detour for travellers exploring the Acadian French-speaking coast along the Sunrise Trail.
