Quick Facts
History & Description
The Havre Boucher Rear Range Light stands on the southwest shore of Havre Boucher harbour on Nova Scotia's Northumberland Shore. The tower standing today is a 30-foot square wooden structure painted white, serving as the rear element of a range-light pair that guides boats into the harbour.
Rear range lights have guided mariners into Havre Boucher since the mid-1800s, with earlier towers on the site dating back to 1842. The present tower was built in 1969 to replace an earlier one, and was fitted with a catadioptric lens and automated by 1973; by 1992 it carried an electric lantern showing a fixed green light, with full automation complete by 1993.
Reached via a short hike rather than directly by car, the rear range light is best understood together with its front partner along the Sunrise Trail. Together the two towers demonstrate the classic range-light technique of alignment that has guided Northumberland Strait mariners for well over a century.
