About Baddeck
Baddeck is a picturesque village on the shimmering Bras d'Or Lakes — Canada's inland saltwater sea — and the undisputed starting point for most Cabot Trail road trips. It was the beloved summer retreat of inventor Alexander Graham Bell, whose estate Beinn Bhreagh overlooks the bay, and the town mixes yachting heritage with Cape Breton fiddle-and-ceilidh culture.
History
Long a Mi'kmaq gathering place on the shores of the Bras d'Or, Baddeck developed as a shipbuilding and telegraph-relay settlement in the 19th century before Alexander Graham Bell chose it for his summer home in 1885, conducting hydrofoil experiments on the bay and drawing an international circle of scientists. The village's role as the Cabot Trail's unofficial gateway was cemented by the growth of Cape Breton tourism in the mid-20th century.
