About Crystal Crescent Beach

Crystal Crescent Beach is a chain of three crescent-shaped white-sand coves 28 km — about 30 minutes — south of Halifax near Sambro, inside Crystal Crescent Beach Provincial Park. The turquoise water over pale sand gives the beach a subtropical look on a sunny summer day, and it has become one of the most photographed stretches of coastline within easy reach of the city. A boardwalk connects the parking area to the first cove and continues along the back of the coves, with washrooms and picnic tables at the trailhead. There are no change rooms, no canteen, and no lifeguards — the park keeps the beach deliberately natural, and the crowd level runs high on sunny weekends anyway, driven by the scenery rather than the facilities. The surf is moderate Atlantic swell; swimmers stay inside the coves where the water is calmer. August water temperatures around 18°C are typical for the Atlantic coast this close to Halifax. The Pennant Point trail starts at the third cove and runs the coastline south — a 10 km round trip over headlands and cobble coves that is one of the best half-day hikes near the city, clothing-optional in the far stretches as is local custom. Swimming, walking, and family outings anchor the first two coves. Dogs are allowed on leash, and access is partially wheelchair accessible via the first boardwalk section. Parking is free but fills by midday in summer.
