Quick Facts
History & Description
The Musquodoboit Harbour Rear Range Light, also known as French Point, stands on Shag Ledge at the entrance to Musquodoboit Harbour on the Eastern Shore, along the Marine Drive in the HRM. First lit in 1904, it is a square wooden tower 20 feet tall with a red roof, sitting on a caisson with its light 19 feet above the water.
The tower carried a 6th order dioptric lens through the 1922 to 1941 period, displaying a fixed red light to help vessels pick their way into the harbour. The ranges and the light were discontinued in 1989, and the station was automated by 1993, though as late as 1996 both the caisson and the wooden tower were still standing.
The little tower on its caisson still stands today, though it is no longer operating, and it is one of the more photographed Eastern Shore lights, reachable by car and featured in a drone video. Its compact size and waterside setting make it a popular stop along the Marine Drive.
