Quick Facts
History & Description
Jeddore Rock Lighthouse once stood on the summit of a bare rock at the entrance to Jeddore Harbour on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore, an offshore perch in the HRM reachable only by boat. The light first went into operation in 1881, housed in a square wooden tower painted white with red stripes and with a keeper's dwelling attached, rising 50 feet with its beam 86 feet above the water.
The station was upgraded over the years to serve the harbour's fishing and coastal traffic. In 1922 it received a 4th order dioptric lens showing a group occulting white light every 40 seconds, and keepers such as John W. Mitchell and Howard Blakeney staffed the post, maintaining a hand foghorn that was still in regular use by 1930. The light was automated by 1958.
Little of the original structure survives today. By 1980 the wooden tower had given way to a skeleton tower with an enclosed stairwell and no lantern, and the historic light is now recorded as no longer standing and no longer operating. Jeddore Rock is best appreciated from the water along the Marine Drive, where the harbour entrance it once guarded remains busy with inshore boats.
