Jeddore Rock Lighthouse

Jeddore Rock Lighthouse marks the summit of a bare rock at the entrance to Jeddore Harbour on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore, an offshore perch in the HRM reachable only by boat. The light first went into operation in 1881, housed in a square wooden tower with a keeper's dwelling attached, painted white and given two red horizontal bands in 1905 to make it more conspicuous as a daymark.

The station was upgraded over the years to serve the harbour's fishing and coastal traffic. In 1922 a fourth-order dioptric lens replaced the earlier apparatus, showing a group-occulting white light that repeated every forty seconds, and keepers such as John W. Mitchell, who spent forty years on the rock, and Howard Blakeney answered vessel signals with a hand foghorn. The last keeper left in November 1958 and the station was automated.

Little of the original structure survives today. The wooden tower gave way in 1943 to a square two-storey dwelling with a lantern room centred on its roof, and in 1977 that building in turn was demolished when a steel skeletal tower with an enclosed central staircase was transferred to the rock from Cranberry Island near Canso. Between 2012 and 2017 the Coast Guard installed the square skeletal tower that stands on the rock today, and the station remains an active, Coast Guard-maintained light, best appreciated from the water along the Marine Drive where the harbour entrance remains busy with inshore boats.
