History & Description
Devils Island South East Lighthouse is located on the southeast end of Devils Island, at the mouth of Eastern Passage, guarding the northeast entrance to Halifax Harbour. The light is shown from a white octagonal tower on the island.
The original lighthouse at this station was established in 1877, replacing an earlier light that had been in operation since 1852. The tapered octagonal wood tower stands 39 feet tall and exhibits a flashing white light. The light was automated by 1967 and remains an active navigational aid.
Devils Island, accessible only by boat, is approximately thirty-seven acres in size and lies just offshore from the community of Eastern Passage. The island has a rich maritime history, with lightkeepers serving the station continuously from 1852 through the mid-20th century.
