History & Description

The Sheet Harbour Passage Rear Range Light is a tapered square wood tower painted white with a red stripe, standing 29 feet tall. Established in 1915, it works in tandem with the Front Range Light to guide vessels through Sheet Harbour Passage, which runs between the mainland and Sober Island along the Eastern Shore. Both lights display a fixed white characteristic and were automated by 1993.

The Sheet Harbour range lights were originally lit with kerosene before being electrified. They form an important navigational aid for vessels entering Sheet Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore. The rear range light is accessible by car and can be viewed from the roadside near Cameron Point.
