Quick Facts
History & Description
The Sheet Rock (Harbour) Lighthouse stood on Sheet Rock at the entrance to Sheet Harbour on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore. The original 1879 structure was a square wooden tower with an attached keeper's dwelling, roughly 41 feet tall, that for decades carried a 4th order occulting white dioptric lens and a hand fog horn. The original tower is no longer standing and the station is no longer operating in its historic form.
The fog horn at Sheet Rock was notable: from 1930 to 1965 it was operated by hand in answer to vessels' signals, one of the last hand-operated fog signals on the coast. In 1988 the old wooden tower was replaced by a white circular fibreglass tower without a lantern, the second-generation Sheet Rock light. The harbour sits along the Marine Drive, reached by way of the bridge that spans the Sheet Harbour River.
