Quick Facts
History & Description
The West Ironbound Island Lighthouse stands on the south side of West Ironbound Island at the entrance to the LaHave River on Nova Scotia's South Shore. The original 1855 light was simply a lantern mounted on the roof of a square wooden keeper's dwelling. The present aid is a circular fibreglass tower, erected in 1987 as the second-generation light, roughly 34 feet tall and still standing and operational.
The 1855 lantern housed eight catadioptric lamps showing a group-flashing white light; keeper John Wolfe tended it from 1858. In 1987 the historic dwelling-and-lantern was replaced by the current white fibreglass tower, which flashes white roughly 80 feet above the water. West Ironbound sits at the mouth of the LaHave River along the Lighthouse Route, reachable only by boat and marking one of the South Shore's most exposed approaches.
