History & Description
The Westhaver Island Lighthouse stands on a small islet at the entrance to Mahone Harbour, one of the most picturesque harbours on Nova Scotia's South Shore. The original 1882 light was a square wooden tower with an attached keeper's dwelling. The present aid is a square wooden tower with a red lantern room, installed in 2021β2022 as the third-generation light. It replaced the round fibreglass tower with a red top that had served since 1985, which had itself replaced the original wooden structure.
The 1882 wooden tower carried a 7th order dioptric lens and was unwatched by 1922, with alterations recorded in 1895 and 1920. After a skeleton tower carried the light from the 1940s into the 1960s, a round fibreglass tower took over in 1985, automated from the start. That tower was replaced in 2021β2022 by the current traditional-style wooden tower, powered by solar energy and built with modern low-maintenance materials. Mahone Harbour sits along the Lighthouse Route, and the islet light remains a familiar sight framed by the town's three churches across the bay.
