History & Description

The Westhaver Island Lighthouse stands on a small islet at the entrance to Mahone Harbour, one of the most picturesque harbours on Nova Scotia's South Shore. The original 1882 light was a square wooden tower with an attached keeper's dwelling. The present aid is a round fibreglass tower with a red top, erected in 1985 as the second-generation light and still standing and operational.

The 1882 wooden tower carried a 7th order dioptric lens and was unwatched by 1922, with alterations recorded in 1895 and 1920. After a skeleton tower carried the light from the 1940s into the 1960s, the current round fibreglass tower took over in 1985, automated from the start. Mahone Harbour sits along the Lighthouse Route, and the islet light is a familiar sight framed by the town's three churches across the bay.
