Quick Facts
History & Description
The Kaulback Island Rear Range Light stands behind its front partner at the northeast end of Kaulback Island in Mahone Bay, also lit in 1914 and accessible only by boat on the Lighthouse Route. It is a tapered wooden tower 22 feet tall, painted white with a red stripe, but because it sits higher its light reaches 68 feet above the water, well above the front light's 36 feet.
When the two lights are lined up, they give mariners a precise range line for navigating the bay's approaches. The rear tower originally carried a catatropic lens showing a fixed white light on the same seasonal April-to-January schedule as the front, and it too was converted to an electric mercury-vapour lantern by 1990.
Automated by 1993, the rear range tower still stands and remains operational. The paired white-and-red towers on Kaulback Island are a familiar Mahone Bay landmark, most often photographed from the water.
