Quick Facts
History & Description
The Kaulback Island Front Range Light sits at the northeast end of Kaulback Island in Mahone Bay, on Nova Scotia's South Shore, and is reachable only by boat along the Lighthouse Route. Lit in 1914, it is a tapered square wooden tower 22 feet tall, painted white with a red vertical stripe, with its light 36 feet above the water.
The front light was originally fitted with a 5th order dioptric lens showing a fixed white light on a seasonal April-to-January schedule, and by 1990 it had been converted to an electric mercury-vapour lantern. Together with its taller rear partner, it forms a range that mariners align to pass safely through the channels of the bay.
The front range was automated by 1993 and the tower still stands and remains operational. Because both Kaulback Island range lights are offshore, they are best admired from a boat or from viewpoints around Mahone Bay rather than visited up close.
