About Louisbourg

Louisbourg is a small coastal community whose entire identity is anchored by the Fortress of Louisbourg — a painstakingly reconstructed 18th-century French fortified town that ranks as the largest historical reconstruction in North America. Costumed interpreters fire cannons, bake bread in stone ovens, and walk the ramparts on the exact foundations where two great sieges decided the fate of New France, while the working harbour outside the walls still hosts the active Louisbourg Lighthouse, one of the oldest light stations on the continent.

History

The French colony of Île Royale founded the Fortress of Louisbourg in 1713 as a thriving cod-fishing capital and military stronghold, but it was captured by British colonial forces in 1745 and again in the decisive 1758 siege that opened the St. Lawrence to General Wolfe's assault on Quebec. The modern village grew up around the ruins in the 19th century as a fishing and coal-shipping port, until Parks Canada began the reconstruction project in 1961, employing unemployed Cape Breton miners to rebuild one-fifth of the original fortified town from its surviving plans.
