About Halifax Colour Festival 2026
The Halifax Colour Festival returns to Alderney Landing on Saturday, September 5, 2026, bringing an exuberant Holi-inspired celebration of colour to the Dartmouth waterfront. Now in its 11th year, the festival is organized by the Indian Festivals Club of Nova Scotia and runs 11 AM to 3 PM, blending clouds of coloured powder, live music, and dance into one of the most joyful afternoons on the regional calendar. Entry is free, kids under 12 get in free, and the setting β the plaza and lawn at Alderney Landing, steps from the Halifax ferry terminal β makes it one of the easiest festivals in the region to reach without a car.
The format is simple and infectious: registered participants receive colour pouches, and at timed counts the crowd launches powder into the air until the whole plaza is a soft haze of pink, yellow, and green. Between throws, DJs and live performers keep the energy up, and food vendors serve Indian street food alongside local festival fare. The first 200 registrants get a free colour pouch, and a paid option β the $25 Colour Birds ticket β bundles five colour pouches, a festival t-shirt, and event sunglasses at a discount. Wear white if you want the full colour-morph effect, and leave the good camera at home; the powder is designed to wash out but finds every pocket.
Alderney Landing sits at 2 Ochterloney Street in Downtown Dartmouth, directly beside the Alderney ferry terminal β a ten-minute sail from Halifax's waterfront on the regular ferry service. The festival is family-friendly and non-alcoholic, timed to the tail of the summer festival season. Check the Eventbrite listing for registration details, then make a day of the Dartmouth side: the ferry ride itself is one of the best-value harbour tours in the city.
