About Halifax Greek Fest
Halifax Greek Fest is the St. George's Greek Orthodox Community's annual four-day festival of Greek food, music and dancing, held every June since the late 1980s at the community hall and church at 1146 Purcells Cove Road. The 2026 edition ran June 11-14: doors opened Thursday at 4 p.m., Friday ran to 11 p.m. with the opening ceremonies at 6 p.m., and the weekend days ran noon to 11 p.m. β a schedule that has hardly changed in decades, because the formula works. Admission was free; you bought exactly the food you wanted, carried it to a hall table, and watched the shows between plates.
The food is the point. The kitchen crew turns out souvlaki packs (three for $14-17), chicken and pork pita wraps ($11-12), pastitsio plates ($21-23), a roasted lamb plate from Friday onward ($25), and trays of tiropitakia and spanakopitakia β the phyllo triangles The Coast once advised saying fast three times. Desserts run from the $5 baklava to galaktoboureko, and the $95 family pack feeds four or five. Between the food runs, the community's Romiosyni dance groups perform in Greek School, junior, intermediate and senior tiers, the band Alexandros and Company plays evening sets, and volunteer guides lead church tours of St. George's icons and artifacts β usually several tours a day. There is a kids' activity area and a church lottery, and the whole weekend functions as the community's major annual fundraiser.
Practical notes for visitors: the festival sits on Purcells Cove Road about 10 minutes south of downtown Halifax, and parking on-site fills fast β in pre-pandemic years hundreds of cars lined Purcells Cove Road, and the free overflow spots go early on Saturday evenings. Many visitors pair a Greek Fest dinner with a loop through the Halifax region or a stop in the Halifax dining scene, and locals treat opening Thursday as the calibre test for the whole summer festival season. The 2026 festival has concluded; expect the 40th edition on a similar June weekend in 2027, confirmed at greekfest.org.
