About The Season of Father Christmas
The Season of Father Christmas turns Mahone Bay into a month-long seaside Christmas celebration from November 27 to December 24, 2026. Run by Festivals of Mahone Bay β the same volunteer non-profit behind the town's wildly popular Scarecrow Festival β the event strings Main Street with twinkling lights and balsam-fir boughs and keeps the three-church-postcard town buzzing long after the summer crowds have gone. It is the South Shore's answer to a European Christmas market: small, walkable, and genuinely community-run, with festive characters strolling the streets and shop windows dressed for the season.
Highlights include the Reindeer Fun Run, where more than 400 people in antlers chase a 3 km closed course down Main Street after dark; a "Christmas at Hogwarts" display built by Bayview Community School volunteers (with a new Yule Ball scene for 2026); the Christmas Card Corner, a picture-perfect outdoor set piece for your own holiday card; and weekend markets and choir performances that fill the town with music. The Elf on the Shelf travels through town each night marking the days until Christmas, and the Merry Mahone Bay Market brings local makers and food vendors together for weekend shopping. Every cafΓ© and restaurant along Main Street joins in with festive menus, and a Wish List shopping game lets visitors fill in a card at any shop for a chance to win the items on it.
Most of the season is free to enjoy β you simply show up and walk Main Street. The town's inns and bed-and-breakfasts book well ahead for December weekends, so reserve early if you want to stay overnight. The Mahone Bay Museum keeps weekend hours through the season, and the three iconic churches that frame the town's famous waterfront view provide a stunning backdrop to the lights. It is the rare winter festival that feels intimate rather than commercial: a small Maritime town doing Christmas the way it has for years, with the harbour and the churches as the stage.
