The CAT ferry from Bar Harbor, I-95 driving route through Maine, direct BostonβHalifax flights, and a 7β10 day itinerary for New England travelers.
New England is the largest American feeder region for Nova Scotia β and it's easy to see why. Boston is a
short flight, a scenic drive, or a memorable ferry ride away, and once you arrive you're in a maritime province
that feels close to home but distinctly its own. This guide covers the three practical ways to make the trip in 2026:
the seasonal CAT ferry from Bar Harbor, the year-round I-95 drive through Maine and
New Brunswick, and direct Boston Logan to Halifax flights. For border documents, currency, mobile
data, and rental cars, see our broader US Traveler Guide β this page
focuses on the routes, the schedule, and the itinerary.

Option 1 β The CAT Ferry (Bar Harbor β Yarmouth)
The CAT is the only passenger-and-car ferry between the United States and Nova Scotia, and for New England
travelers it's the signature way to arrive. The high-speed catamaran sails from Bar Harbor, Maine
(not Portland β that service ended years ago) to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, dropping you on the Acadian Shore
with your own vehicle. According to Bay Ferries, 86% of CAT bookings originate in the US, so
the service is built around American travelers.

Before you board
Book the moment your dates are firm
Bay Ferries reported 33,832 passengers booked on The CAT as of Aug 14, 2026 β a 37% jump from 24,613 in early July. Year over year the season is running about 17% below the same point last season: American bookings are holding close to last year's levels, but Canadian bookings are down sharply. Summer weekend sailings still sell out first, so reserve at ferries.ca as soon as you know your dates, especially for July and August.
Border documents for every passenger
The CAT crosses the USβCanada border, so everyone needs a valid passport, passport card, or NEXUS card. An Enhanced Driver's License works for land/sea entry but a passport book is fastest at customs in Yarmouth. Have documents in hand, not buried in luggage.
Arrive 90 minutes before sailing
Vehicle check-in closes before departure. Build in 60β90 minutes at the Bar Harbor terminal for ticketing and vehicle staging. Foot passengers should arrive at least 60 minutes ahead. Long-term parking in Bar Harbor books up in peak summer β reserve it ahead.
Rental cars need a cross-border letter
If you're boarding a US rental car, you need a letter from the rental company authorizing cross-border transport. Request this when you pick up the car in Boston or New England β not at the ferry terminal. Confirm your US auto policy covers you in Nova Scotia and carry proof.
Vehicle prep & extras
Roof boxes, bike racks, and small trailers are accommodated but may change your fare and staging lane. Note your fuel level, remove valuables from sight, and keep keys with you. Motorcycles and bicycles have separate fares.
π Driving your own car vs. renting
The CAT shines when you bring your own vehicle β no summer rental car scarcity in Halifax, no one-way drop fees,
and your US insurance travels with you (confirm Canada coverage with your insurer first). If you'd rather fly and
rent on arrival, note that Yarmouth has very limited rental inventory; reserve at the Yarmouth airport well ahead,
or pick up in Halifax and drive down. See the rental car section
of the US Traveler Guide.
Option 2 β Driving from Boston via I-95 & New Brunswick
The all-drive route is the only year-round option, and for many New Englanders it's the real adventure β a
classic road trip up I-95, through Down East Maine, across the border, and into the Maritimes. Almost all of it
is divided highway once you're in New Brunswick.

π£οΈ Driving notes for Americans
Speed limits: 100β110 km/h on highways (62β68 mph), 50 km/h in towns (31 mph). RCMP enforce strictly.
Right on red: allowed in Nova Scotia after a full stop, same as most US states, unless signed otherwise.
Phones: handheld use while driving is illegal. Hands-free only.
Gas: ~$1.87β1.90 CAD/litre (~$5.20β5.30 USD/gallon). Fill up in larger towns β stations are sparse in rural Cape Breton.
Wildlife: watch for deer and moose at dusk and dawn, especially in northern New Brunswick and Cape Breton.
Cobequid Pass toll: NS-104 has a $4.00 CAD/axle toll β avoidable via the free Hwy 4/104 alternate through Tatamagouche.
For currency, insurance, mobile data, and rental car strategy, see the full US Traveler Guide.
Option 3 β Direct Boston Logan β Halifax Flights
The fastest route from New England to Nova Scotia is the one most travelers overlook. Direct flights from
Boston Logan (BOS) to Halifax Stanfield (YHZ) run year-round and take about
90 minutes β you can leave Boston after breakfast and be on the Halifax waterfront for lunch.
Boston (BOS) β Halifax (YHZ)
Airlines
Air Canada, Delta (year-round)
Flight time
~1.5 hours
Frequency
Multiple daily in summer; reduced winter schedule
Round-trip from
~$200β350 USD (book 2β3 months ahead for July/August)
Other New England / nearby origins
New York (EWR/JFK/LGA): direct to YHZ on Air Canada, United, Delta (~2 hrs).
Philadelphia (PHL): seasonal on American (~2 hrs).
The smartest New England trip for a tight schedule: fly Boston β Halifax, then rent a car at YHZ (or downtown
Halifax, which sometimes has better availability than the airport). You skip two days of driving each way and
still get full mobility in Nova Scotia. Critical: reserve the rental car months ahead for
July and August β summer availability is the single biggest pain point. See the
rental car section for the full playbook.
Sample Itinerary: 7 to 10 Days, New England to Nova Scotia
This route blends the CAT ferry outbound with a loop through the South Shore, Annapolis Valley, and Halifax β
and an optional Cape Breton extension for travelers with 9β10 days. Flying one way and driving the other is a
great variation if you don't want to double back.
The 7-day CAT-ferry loop (Boston β Bar Harbor β Yarmouth β Halifax β South Shore)
Day 1
Boston β Bar Harbor, ME
Drive ~5 hrs north on I-95 to Bar Harbor. Spend the afternoon in Acadia National Park β drive the Park Loop Road, watch sunset from Cadillac Mountain (reserve a vehicle pass ahead). Overnight in Bar Harbor and prep for an early ferry check-in.
Day 2
CAT Ferry β Yarmouth, NS β Acadian Shore
Morning CAT sailing (3.5 hrs) to Yarmouth. Clear customs on arrival, then drive the Acadian Shore (Clare / Baie Sainte-Marie) through Church Point and the largest wooden church in North America. Overnight in the Digby area β famous for scallops.
A full day in the capital β the Citadel, the Maritime Museum, the waterfront boardwalk, and the Public Gardens. Don't miss the Halifax donair. Stock up on supplies before heading down the South Shore.
Day 5
Halifax β Peggy's Cove β Lunenburg
South Shore day: the iconic Peggy's Cove lighthouse, the fishing village of Mahone Bay, and a late afternoon in UNESCO World Heritage Lunenburg. Overnight in Lunenburg or Bridgewater.
Day 6
Lunenburg β Kejimkujik or back toward Yarmouth
Choose your own adventure: inland to Kejimkujik National Park (dark sky preserve, Mi'kmaw petroglyphs) or continue the Lighthouse Route west toward Yarmouth for an early next-day ferry.
Day 7
CAT Ferry β Bar Harbor β Boston
Reverse CAT sailing to Bar Harbor, then the I-95 drive home to Boston. Alternatively, fly out of Halifax (YHZ) and leave the car β one-way rentals are possible but pricey in summer.
Extend to 10 days: add Cape Breton & the Cabot Trail
Day 8
Halifax β Cape Breton (Baddeck)
Drive ~4 hrs to Baddeck on the Bras d'Or Lakes β the classic Cabot Trail starting point. Visit the Alexander Graham Bell Museum.
Fly home from Sydney (YQY) back to Boston, or drive back to Halifax for the direct BOS flight. Add a puffin-watching boat tour near Bird Islands before you leave Cape Breton.
π Variations
Fly-drive (7 days): Fly Boston β Halifax, skip the CAT, spend the week on the South Shore, Annapolis Valley, and Cape Breton. Fastest way to see the most.
All-drive (10 days): Drive both ways via I-95 and New Brunswick β no ferry β and add Moncton's Hopewell Rocks on the loop.
Shoulder season (SeptβOct): Combine the fall foliage on the Cabot Trail with cooler weather and thinner crowds. The CAT runs through Oct 14.
What's Different in Nova Scotia (for Americans)
The basics are easy β English-speaking, same electrical outlets, same driving side of the road, and US cards
work everywhere. A few things catch Americans off guard:
π
Metric measurements
Speed limits, distances, and gas are metric. Highway speeds of 100β110 km/h are 62β68 mph. A quick rule: divide km/h by 1.6 to get mph.
π΅
Currency & tax
Canadian dollars. Sales tax (HST) is 15% and not always shown on the sticker price. The strong USD means your money goes about 35β40% further in 2026.
πΊ
Alcohol rules
Beer, wine, and spirits are sold in NSLC stores, not supermarkets. Duty-free allowance entering Canada is 1.14 L of liquor or 1.5 L of wine or 8.5 L of beer per adult.
π±
Phone & data
US plans roam in Canada (often $5β10/day). For longer trips, an eSIM (Airalo, Holafly) is cheaper. Coverage is spotty in rural Cape Breton β download offline maps.

Plan Every Step of Your Trip
Routes handled β now build the rest of your Nova Scotia trip with these essential planning guides.
How long does it take to get from Boston to Nova Scotia? It depends on the route. Flying Boston Logan to Halifax is about 1.5 hours direct. Driving the full route via Maine and New Brunswick is roughly 10β11 hours plus border time. The CAT ferry option is about 5 hours driving from Boston to Bar Harbor plus a 3.5-hour crossing β most travelers break this over two days with a night in Bar Harbor or Acadia.
Does the CAT ferry still run from Portland, Maine to Nova Scotia? No. The CAT currently sails from Bar Harbor, Maine (the North Bar Harbor terminal) to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia β not from Portland. The Portland service ended years ago. The 2026 season runs May 14 to October 14 with about 132 round trips. Portland is still a useful staging town β it's only ~2.5 hours south of Bar Harbor on I-295/US-1. If you'd rather not drive to Bar Harbor, alternatives include flying Boston or Portland to Halifax (connecting flights), or driving the all-land route through Maine and New Brunswick (~8 hours from Portland, year-round).
Can I drive from Boston to Nova Scotia in one day? Yes, but it's a long day. Boston to Halifax via I-95 and the Trans-Canada through New Brunswick is about 700 miles (10β11 hours of driving) plus a border stop. Most travelers prefer to split it with a night in Bar Harbor (and take the CAT) or a night in southern Maine or New Brunswick. The all-drive route is the only year-round option β the CAT only runs May to mid-October.
Are there direct flights from Boston to Halifax? Yes. Air Canada and Delta both fly Boston Logan (BOS) to Halifax Stanfield (YHZ) year-round, with flight time around 1.5 hours. It's the fastest way to reach Nova Scotia from New England. Summer frequencies increase β book 2β3 months ahead for July and August, when flights fill up.
Do I need a passport to go from Boston to Nova Scotia? Yes. US citizens need a valid passport, passport card, or NEXUS card to enter Canada and re-enter the United States. An Enhanced Driver's License from a participating state works for land and sea entry (including the CAT ferry) but not for flights. Bring your passport book if you're flying BostonβHalifax.
What is the best New England to Nova Scotia itinerary? For a one-week trip, fly Boston to Halifax and spend the week on the South Shore, Annapolis Valley, and Halifax itself. For 7β10 days, drive the Boston β Bar Harbor β CAT ferry β Yarmouth route and loop back through the Annapolis Valley and Halifax. A 10-day trip lets you add Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail. See the sample itineraries above.
How much does the CAT ferry cost from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth? Budget roughly $337β481 USD one-way for a car plus two adults, depending on the season β spring and fall are closer to $366, midsummer closer to $481. Fares change, so check ferries.ca for live pricing and book early: 2026 ridership is up nearly 29% year-over-year and summer sailings sell out.
Is it cheaper to fly or drive from Boston to Nova Scotia? For one traveler, flying is usually cheaper and far faster once you factor in gas, ferry fares or hotels, and time. For families or groups of 3β4 β especially with a week or more to explore β driving or the CAT ferry becomes competitive, and you avoid rental car scarcity in Halifax in summer. Use the Trip Cost Calculator to compare for your group.
