Quirky Roadside Attractions & Small-Town Oddities

Cow Bay, a coastal community about 20 minutes from downtown Halifax, does not have a giant cow. It has a 12-foot concrete moose, carved in 1959 by 30-year-old folk artist Winston Bronnum and standing at Silver Sands Beach Park ever since - wedged between two houses, gazing over the rocky beach. Sixty-plus years of salt air have made him a genuine local landmark, and his slightly weathered expression is half the charm. The adjacent beach and surf break make this more than a drive-by.

Free, visible at all hours from the small park at Silver Sands Beach; dawn-to-dusk parking. It is an easy add-on to a Eastern Passage or Cow Bay Beach drive from Halifax. Respect the neighbouring houses - the moose sits on a narrow residential stretch.

In Middle Musquodoboit, an hour's drive northeast of Halifax into the valley, a giant hummingbird sculpture hovers as roadside folk art - one of those delightfully unexplained rural Nova Scotia installations that road-trippers love. The surrounding village is a quiet jumping-off point for the Musquodoboit Trailway and the abandoned railbed trails that thread the valley.

Free, visible from the road. Make it part of a Musquodoboit Valley loop drive from Halifax - hardly anyone from away ever drives it, which is exactly its appeal.

On October 4, 1967, at least eleven people - including RCMP officers - watched a 60-foot object crash into the waters off Shag Harbour, prompting a federal search-and-rescue operation and an official Canadian government file that never reached a conclusion. A roadside marker commemorates the event, and the community's UFO Interpretive Centre tells the story with witness statements and clippings. It is Canada's answer to Roswell, minus the commercial excess - this is a small fishing village that also happens to host the country's most credible UFO crash story.

The interpretive centre operates seasonally (typically summer into early fall); the roadside marker is always accessible. Since 2009, the Municipality of Barrington has stacked real lobster traps - modern metal ones now, festooned with coloured buoys and bows - into a giant Christmas tree on the North East Point waterfront at Cape Sable Island. It is lit in late November with fireworks, timed to the start of the southwestern Nova Scotia lobster season, making it the only Christmas tree in Canada that doubles as a fishery celebration. The event, Christmas at the Causeway, has grown into a genuine regional festival.

Free to visit once assembled (late November through the holidays). The lighting ceremony in late November includes fireworks and community events. Pair with the South Shore lighthouse route - Cape Sable Island is also home to the tallest lighthouse in the province, Cape Sable Light.

Since 1976 Ivan Higgins has run Cosby's Garden Centre outside Liverpool - and every winter, inside its greenhouse, he sculpts. The results accumulate in a sculpture garden out back: concrete figures real and imagined, commissioned memorials, a 9-foot glassblower he made for a Cabot Trail gallery, and an ever-growing cast of characters that visitors describe as a hidden world opening up behind a normal garden store. There is no gate, no ticket, and no end to it - Higgins keeps building, and the garden keeps absorbing the new work.

Open seven days a week, year-round, during garden centre hours (call (902) 354-2133 to confirm). Free to walk, donations appreciated. It is a 10-minute detour off the Highway 103 Liverpool exits and pairs naturally with the town's museums - see the South Shore guide for the coastal routing.

One of Canada's oddest Cold War artifacts: six authentic sections of the Berlin Wall stand along the edge of the Cobequid Trail in Bible Hill, beside the Nova Scotia Agricultural College campus (now part of Dalhousie University). The concrete segments - graffiti on the western face, bare dowel holes on the eastern side - were installed after the Wall's fall and moved to this quiet, reflective spot on the trail. It is exactly the kind of thing you would drive past without knowing existed, which is precisely the point of this guide.

Free and viewable at any time along the publicly accessible Cobequid Trail. Park near the agricultural campus and walk or cycle the trail; the wall sections sit just off the path. Combine with downtown Truro's murals and the tidal bore viewing spot at nearby Lower Truro for an easy half-day.

Outside the Millbrook Cultural & Heritage Centre, a 40-foot fiberglass statue of Glooscap - the benevolent giant hero of Mi'kmaw creation stories - has watched over Highway 102 since 2005. The height is deliberate: 40 feet represents the Bay of Fundy's roughly 40-foot tides. Glooscap taught his people the canoe and fire (hence the torch he holds), and legend says he created the Five Islands by transforming into a giant beaver and slapping the ocean with his tail. The heritage centre inside tells those stories properly - it is a museum, not just a statue stop.

Viewing the statue is free from the centre's grounds; the Millbrook Cultural & Heritage Centre itself is worth the admission for Mi'kmaw history, art, and guided interpretation. Stewiacke's favourite geographic flex: the town sits halfway between the Equator and the North Pole. The pedants' caveat is that because Earth is not a perfect sphere, the true halfway line sits about 16 km north of the 45th parallel - which happens to be right around Stewiacke anyway (nearby Alton hosts the marker). Calculations date to 1937 by Geostat Canada, and the town has never let the nuance spoil a good photo op. Mastodon Ridge marks the spot with a sign reading 4,985 km / 3,097 miles to each end of the planet.

Free photo opportunity at Mastodon Ridge (ask staff for directions to the nearby true marker). The site adds a life-size mastodon replica - a real mastodon was unearthed nearby in 1991 - plus mini golf, a playground, and a visitor information centre in summer. A perfect Highway 102 leg-stretch between Halifax and Truro.

Nature's entry in the oddities list: a narrow column of basalt roughly 20-30 feet tall, standing on a dinner-plate-sized base at the lip of St. Mary's Bay, defying both gravity and photography. The trail to it is a well-groomed walk (about 2.5 km round trip) ending in a 235-step staircase down to a viewing platform - you will feel those on the way back up. It is the single most photogenic natural oddity on the Digby Neck, and pairs perfectly with the ferry hops to Brier and Long Islands.

Open roughly May 19 to October 31 with interpretive panels, rest areas, and picnic tables; the trail is walkable off-season but unmaintained. Springhill's deadpan monument to small-town humour: a bench along Highway 2 that locals painted and named 'The Liars Bench' as a prank in 1942, on the theory that anything said while seated on it is guaranteed untrue. Eight decades later it remains a beloved (and refreshed) landmark. Roadside America rates it 'worth a detour,' which for a painted bench in a former coal-mining town is a remarkable achievement.

Free, visible from the road at the southwest edge of Springhill (Hwy 2/McGee St at Herrett Rd). Combine with the Springhill Miners' Museum and a tour of the former coal mine - one of the region's most memorable underground experiences.

Parrsboro's take on the Glooscap legend is older and weirder than Millbrook's: a 20-foot red fiberglass figure erected in 1972 near the town hall, across from the park pavilion, honouring the giant creator figure of Mi'kmaw storytelling. Where Millbrook's Glooscap is monumental, Parrsboro's is folk-art strange - unbalanced proportions, a loin cloth, and a shade of red that photographs beautifully against a blue sky. The Fundy shore connection is real: Glooscap legends are tied to the Bay of Fundy and its tides throughout the region.

Free, viewable at any time on the north end of Parrsboro's main street. Parrsboro itself rewards a half-day: the Ship's Company Theatre, fossil hunting at Partridge Island, and the Bay of Fundy's dramatic minas basin tides.

Maud Lewis's real tiny house now lives in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, but on the Digby Neck you can walk into a full-scale replica so faithful it took builder Murray Ross a year of research before construction. Ross's family knew Maud and her husband Everett personally, and the replica - beside his own home in Rossway - holds copies of her paintings, framed photographs, a bed like Maud's, and a rebuilt version of Everett's cluttered shop where he kept scallop shells and stones for Maud to paint. It ranks among Digby's top attractions on Tripadvisor, which is remarkable for what is essentially one man's tribute on a side road.

In the 1930s, concrete entrepreneur Charlie Macdonald sent his Kentville workers to his family's remote camping spot on the Minas Basin coast so they would have income through the Depression - and had them build cottages from concrete, reinforced with iron and driftwood, painted vivid colours, with no plans at all. Five went up; four survive, looking like confectionery houses scattered behind the rhododendrons, including one whose verandah roof rests on what appear to be tree trunks. The teapot-shaped fifth crumbled and was bulldozed into the sea. They are private and rustic inside - museum members can actually book the blue one for a week - but from the beach they are one of the province's most photographed oddities.

Drive through Halls Harbour, pass the lobster pound, follow the bay around and take Simpson Road (signed) to its end - the beach is flat, step-free, and the cottages are right there. No amenities (no washrooms or picnic tables). Look for the donation mailbox by the shore and contribute if you take photos - it funds the upkeep. Fidheal Mhor a' Ceilidh - the Big Fiddle of the Ceilidh - has towered over the Sydney waterfront since 2005. Designed and built by Cyril Hearn from solid steel, the fiddle and its bow reach 60 feet, making it (by the straightforward metric of size) the largest fiddle on the planet and an unofficial symbol of Cape Breton's Celtic music tradition. It stands directly beside the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion, so it is the first thing a huge share of Nova Scotia's cruise visitors ever photograph.

Free and viewable 24/7 from the boardwalk; the adjacent pavilion houses vendors and the Sydney waterfront market when ships are in port. Go at sunrise or late evening for photos without crowds - the sculpture is lit at night. Pair it with a walk along the boardwalk and, in summer, live fiddle music is rarely far away.

Oxford calls itself the Wild Blueberry Capital of Canada, and it has the roadside statuary to prove it: a giant blueberry on Main Street (Highway 321, north of the Trans-Canada interchange), plus a cheerful Blueberry Man figure nearby. It is a classic big-thing-in-a-small-town stop - five minutes out of the car, a photo, a pun caption, and suddenly the drive to or from Cape Breton has a highlight. The surrounding Cumberland County fields produce a serious share of Canada's wild blueberry crop, so the big berry is earned, not ironic.

Free, visible from the road, safe to photograph year-round. Oxford sits at the junction of Highways 104 and 321, making this a natural fuel-and-photo stop on the Halifax-Sydney drive. In late July and August, farm stands in the area sell fresh wild blueberries by the box.
