History & Description

The Woods Harbour Lighthouse stands on Big Ledge in the centre of Cockerwitt Passage, marking the entrance to Woods Harbour on Nova Scotia's South Shore. The original 1900 light was a tapered square wooden tower with a red lantern. The present aid is a caisson light, a square wooden tower on a wooden crib, erected between 1962 and 1965 as the second-generation Woods Harbour light.

The 1900 wooden tower carried a 7th order dioptric lens and a hand fog horn that was answered on signal from vessels, with a powered fog horn installed at the light in 1962. The current caisson light, standing about 21 feet tall, has been decommissioned but remains a well-known landmark. Woods Harbour sits along the Lighthouse Route at the southern edge of the province, the home port of one of Nova Scotia's largest lobster fleets.
