Quick Facts
History & Description
The Pubnico Harbour Lighthouse stands at the end of Beach Point, marking the east entrance to Pubnico Harbour in the heart of Nova Scotia's Acadian Shores. The present light is a circular fibreglass tower, about 29 feet tall, painted white with a red band, still standing and operational. It is the third-generation aid on a site that has served Acadian fishermen since 1854.
The original 1854 tapered wooden tower, tended by keeper Maturin Amiro, was replaced in 1889 by a second wooden tower that famously survived Hurricane Edna in 1954, which submerged the causeway and flooded both tower and dwelling. After a skeleton tower carried the light through the 1970s, the current fibreglass tower was built around 1984 and automated by 1987. The light sits along the Lighthouse Route near the historic Acadian village of Pubnico.
