Quick Facts
History & Description
The White Head Island Lighthouse stands on the southern point of White Head Island in Lobster Bay, off the Acadian Shore near Argyle. The original 1874 light was a tapered square wooden tower attached to a keeper's dwelling. That tower was destroyed by lightning in 1951, completely burnt, and replaced the same year by the present square tower on a concrete building, still standing and operational.
The 1874 tower carried a catadioptric fixed red light and gained a fog signal by 1912; keepers included Mr. Spinney and Walter Goodwin, who served eleven years. After the 1951 lightning fire, the second-generation concrete-and-tower light took over, displaying a fixed white light from roughly 39 feet above the water. White Head Island sits in Lobster Bay along the Lighthouse Route, at the heart of Nova Scotia's most productive lobster grounds.
