History & Description
Bunker Island Lighthouse, known locally as the Bug Light, guards the reef off the southwest point of Bunker Island at the entrance to Yarmouth Harbour. The first tower, a wooden light on a cribwork pier, was lit in 1874. Harbour dredging forced a replacement further inshore in 1924, and the current tower — a white square concrete tower on an engine room, perched on a red caisson — was built in 1959.
The light's most storied years belong to the Cottreau family: keeper Jules Cottreau and his wife Ida raised six children at the station between 1931 and the early 1960s, and the family dog, Teddy, was famous for climbing the ladder to help sound the fog bell. The last keeper left in 1981, and the light was automated by 1984.
The Bug Light is best photographed from the shore at the Lost to the Sea Memorial Park on Yarmouth Bar Road, which looks out over the harbour channel to the little tower — often framed alongside Cape Forchu Lighthouse, the town's famous beacon at the harbour mouth.
