Quick Facts
History & Description
The Green Island Lighthouse near Chebogue Point stands at the centre of a small island about five kilometres south of Chebogue Point in the Atlantic Ocean off Nova Scotia's Yarmouth and Acadian Shore. The 20-foot tower is a square white structure perched on a square concrete building and topped with a red lantern, a compact station built to mark a dangerous offshore reach of coastline.
A light was first established here in 1964, but the station's fog-signal history reaches back further: a fog signal was established on Green Island in 1919, and over the years keepers operated cotton-powder fog explosives and a fog gun before modern equipment arrived. The light was automated by 1981, ending the era of resident keepers.
Among the last keepers were Jim Smith, who served from 1967 to 1978, and Ranford Malone, who tended the station until automation in 1981. Because the island sits well offshore and is accessible only by boat along the Lighthouse Route, the station is best seen from the water or distant mainland viewpoints rather than visited up close.
