About Will-oh! Horse Simulator
Nova Scotia's first Racewood Dressage Pro horse simulator at Willow & Withers in Sheffield Mills, offering coached sessions, clinics and barn nights with real-time biomechanics feedback for beginners through advanced riders.
Features & Highlights
Detailed Information
Will-oh! is a horse, sort of. She is a Racewood Dressage Pro simulator, the first of her kind in Nova Scotia and one of only a handful in Canada, and she lives in a climate-controlled training studio at Willow & Withers, an equestrian facility in Sheffield Mills in the Annapolis Valley. Riding her is the closest thing Atlantic Canada has to a biomechanics lab for horsepeople: the mechanical horse mirrors the gaits of a live animal while sensors deliver instant feedback on your seat, posture and control. The experience holds a perfect 5.0 Google rating, runs year-round, and requires no horse experience whatsoever; for many visitors it is the safest first ride in the province. For the wider Valley, see our Annapolis Valley guide.
The technology is the draw, but the mission is serious training. Willow & Withers positions Will-oh! equally for curious first-timers and committed riders: she never tires, never spooks, and always gives you her undivided attention, which makes her a tool for everything from confidence rebuilding after a fall to fine-tuning advanced dressage movements. Sessions run one-on-one with a coach or as group clinics and barn nights, and the facility's rehab-for-riders program uses the simulator for riders returning from injury.
The Machine and the Method
A Racewood Dressage Pro is not an arcade ride. The British-built simulator replicates the movement of a live horse at walk, trot and canter, including the lateral work and collection phases that dressage riders spend years pursuing. Sensors in the saddle track your weight distribution and position in real time, and a screen in front of the rider shows the mechanics as they happen: where your seat bones land, how your aids land, when your balance drifts.
That feedback loop is what separates a session from a trail ride. On a live horse, you ride; on Will-oh!, you ride and watch the consequences. Coaches can freeze the moment, correct it, and run it again, the same reason golf and ski simulators have become standard training tools. Willow & Withers frames the result in three words: safe, smart, and surprisingly fun.
Who Will-oh! Is For
The facility's own breakdown of who benefits runs wider than most visitors expect:
- Curious first-time riders β meet riding in the safest, most approachable way possible before ever approaching a live horse. Many visitors book Will-oh! precisely because a first ride on a simulator carries none of the fall risk.
- Equestrians refining technique β biomechanics feedback a live horse cannot give you, session after session.
- Returning riders rebuilding confidence β the never-spooks guarantee matters most to riders coming back after a bad experience.
- Therapeutic and confidence-building sessions β the controlled environment suits adaptive and confidence-focused programming.
- Coaches: a demonstration tool for concepts that are hard to show from the ground.
- Groups, clinics and barn nights β book the simulator for a group event, a memorable team outing, or a barn social.
There is one hard rule: a strict 220 lb (100 kg) rider weight limit, enforced for the equipment's sake.
Sheffield Mills: Horses, Eagles and the Valley Floor
The setting is part of the experience. Willow & Withers sits at 1575 Middle Dyke Road in Sheffield Mills, a farming hamlet between Wolfville and Canning best known for two things: horses and eagles. The community is home to the annual Sheffield Mills Eagle Watch every winter, when bald eagles descend on the farm fields and the village fills with photographers. A little over an hour from Halifax and Halifax Stanfield International Airport, it makes an easy add-on to a Valley wine-country loop: a morning session on Will-oh!, lunch in Wolfville, and the afternoon among the vineyards.
The facility's own pages put it plainly: open daily, year-round, weather-proof. That last word is not filler in a province where winter shuts down most outdoor equestrian activity for months at a time; a January session on Will-oh! is one of the few rides that doesn't depend on the forecast.
