Features & Highlights
Detailed Information
Tide Rollers & Mudlarkers is a one-guide touring outfit in Parrsboro, at the heart of the Cliffs of Fundy UNESCO Global Geopark, that walks small private groups onto the exposed ocean floor of the Upper Bay of Fundy between the world's highest tides. Every outing is led by Anna Hergert, an Outdoor Council of Canada certified field leader and a Certified Cliffs of Fundy UNESCO Geopark Experience Provider, and every outing is private: solo travellers, couples, and groups of up to six. Since 2022 the company has built its reputation on a single discipline: reading the tide table better than anyone else on this shore, then building each day around what the water leaves behind. For the bigger picture on the region, see our Cliffs of Fundy Geopark guide and our complete Bay of Fundy travel guide.
Walking the Sea Floor Between the Tides
The Bay of Fundy empties and refills roughly twice a day, and on the Minas Basin shore around Parrsboro the retreat leaves kilometres of seabed (mudflat, sand bar, and tide-sculpted cliff base) walkable for a window of about three hours after low tide. That window is the entire product. Tours are deliberately timed to it: the company schedules outings within three hours after high tide and three hours following low tide, so guests are on the ground when the shore is open and off it before the water returns. Miss the window and there is no ocean floor to walk β only grey water where it used to be.
What you walk on varies with the route Anna selects for your group and the day: hidden coves tucked between headlands, cliff bases carved by ice and tidal scour, gravel bars studded with the fossils and semi-precious stones (agates and amethyst among them) for which the Minas Basin shore is known. Because Parrsboro sits inside the UNESCO Global Geopark, the coastline itself is the interpretive material: layer upon layer of sandstone and basalt recording an ancient rift valley, dinosaur-era tracks and coal seams from the Jurassic-age forests that once stood here. None of it is roped off or behind glass. You are standing on it, and the guide's job is to make you see what you are standing on.
The reviews converge hard on one point: this is the shore explained properly, not merely pointed at. "Hands down: THIS was the best part of our trip to the Maritimes," a Minneapolis reviewer wrote on Tripadvisor after an ocean-floor walk. "We explored the ocean floor at low tide. Anna is very knowledgeable about the Minas Basin/Bay of Fundy and pointed out many interesting facts about the area." The company holds the #1 ranking among Parrsboro attractions on Tripadvisor and was featured on the RV-travel YouTube series "Keep Your DAYDREAM" β their tour segment runs from the 8:08 mark of the episode, a detail the company lists with understandable pride.
A Certified Guide, German or English, Groups of Six at Most
- Private and tailor-made: no mixed-group departures β route, pace, start time, and content are built around your group, and the company explicitly accommodates all ages and abilities, from children to seniors.
- Certified leadership: OCC field-leader certification is the national standard for guided hiking in Canada, and the geopark's Certified Experience Provider designation means formal training in the geopark's geology and stories. You are not following a casual local; you are being interpreted to.
- Bilingual tours: outings are available in English or German β a genuine rarity on this shore, and a meaningful plus for European visitors touring the Maritimes.
- Everything handled: route selection, tide timing, safety calls, and snacks are the company's job. Guests bring footwear and a camera, or take the tour camera-free and look, an option the operator promotes for guests who would rather not shoot through a viewfinder.
- All-season operation: each part of the year offers different shore conditions and light, and the operator runs across the season rather than only in July and August.
Booking is direct and refreshingly old-fashioned: text 1 (306) 631-8539, email arrsboroShoreTours@gmail.com, use the contact form on the website, or message on WhatsApp. Because each tour is planned individually around tide times, there is no drop-in schedule and no street-front kiosk β you arrange it in advance, and the confirmation sets the meeting point in the Parrsboro area. The operator also points travellers to the official Tourism Nova Scotia listing for the current year's tour menu.
What to Plan Around Before You Book
The honest catch is structural: the tide, not you, sets the clock. A low-tide ocean-floor walk can mean a 7 am meeting or a supper-time departure, and the best windows drift about an hour later each day, so a tour that suits your morning on Tuesday will be a twilight outing by Friday. The shore is also fully exposed β wind, fog, and boot-sucking mud are normal Fundy conditions, so dress for weather and wear footwear you can rinse off or sacrifice. Weather cancellations and route swaps do happen; the operator reschedules rather than forces a poor outing, which is the right call but does mean your plans need slack in them.
Finally, this is a small operation built around one certified guide. In peak foliage season β late September into October, when the geopark's red cliffs draw road-trippers from across the region β the calendar fills, and last-minute requests go unmet. Book early, be flexible on the time of day, and you will get the shore at its absolute best: empty, luminous, and still wet from the sea.
