The Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk is one of the most attraction-dense stretches in Atlantic Canada. In a single 3.8-kilometre walk from Pier 21 to Casino Nova Scotia, you pass three major museums, a national historic site, one of the oldest farmers' markets in North America, and a working harbour full of ships. It is the city's number-one sightseeing route, and the reason most first-time visitors base their day around it. The working harbour is also Nova Scotia filming country — the Amazon series We Were Liars filmed in and around Halifax, including the waterfront, for Season 1 in 2024 and returned for Season 2 in summer 2026. Pier 21 and the Canadian Museum of Immigration
At the southern end, Pier 21 National Historic Site is Canada's equivalent of Ellis Island: between 1928 and 1971, more than a million immigrants took their first steps on Canadian soil here. The Canadian Museum of Immigration tells those stories through personal accounts, artifacts, and a restored arrivals hall that still feels like a working gateway.
Maritime Museum of the Atlantic
Midway along the route, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic holds one of the world's most important Titanic collections, including a deck chair recovered from the wreck, and extensive exhibits on the 1917 Halifax Explosion. Moored outside in summer are CSS Acadia, a 1913 hydrographic survey ship, and at Sackville Landing nearby, HMCS Sackville, the last surviving Flower-class corvette from the Second World War.
Discovery Centre and the Seaport Market
Just off the boardwalk, the Discovery Centre is an interactive science museum that families rate among the city's best rainy-day stops. At the Seaport end, the Seaport Farmers' Market anchors the waterfront's food scene with vendors who have traded at this site since the 1700s.
The working harbour
Between the museums, the boardwalk itself is the attraction: cargo ships and cruise liners move past the wharves, tour boats come and go, and the small red-and-white lighthouse near the casino end has become the city's most Instagrammed landmark. Benches and viewing platforms line the whole route, so it is easy to stop and simply watch the harbour work.
