Detailed Information

Chanoey's Pasta is a quick-service pasta house on downtown Dartmouth's Portland Street that turned take-out into a signature. Husband-and-wife owners Carl Mangali and Catherine Paulino opened the original shop at 41 Portland Street in June 2020, in the middle of a pandemic, and watched it become one of the city's steadiest sellers β€” Paulino told The Coast the Dartmouth store "continues to sell out daily." The name, a portmanteau of Friends characters Chandler and Joey, telegraphs the tone: fast, unpretentious, and generous. For Dartmouth's wider dining scene, see our Dartmouth guide.

The model is deliberate. Pasta dishes built on what Paulino calls the business's three pillars ("affordability, portability and quickness") leave the kitchen in minutes, packed for take-out first and eaten at the counter second. The menu roams well beyond Italian classics: beef stroganoff and lamb rogan josh sit beside donair pasta, a distinctly Halifax crossover that puts the city's favourite street food in sauce form. At most hours a hot plate lands in under five minutes, which makes Chanoey's a practical answer to the "where can we eat right now" question on a Dartmouth evening.

From Two Owners to Two Cities

The Coast traced the arc in January 2022, when the couple opened a second location at 6214 Quinpool Road in Halifax, in a room vacated by a ramen shop, a space the pair had long wanted complete with a hood system and fridges its previous occupants passed along with the lease. "It's like a pandemic-proof business," Paulino said of the take-out-first model. "We realized that we hit the jackpot as soon as we started doing take-out pastas." Business grew with each COVID wave, she noted, because her customers had already moved to take-out: "Open dine-in, closed dine-in β€” people are done with it."

The Dartmouth original kept selling through it all, staffed up from a two-person operation to a team of eight. The Halifax chapter has since wound down: the Quinpool Road branch is no longer operating, its Google listing now marked as such. The Dartmouth shop at 41 Portland Street is the location to visit today. Regulars treat it as the destination: a small room with a counter, a few seats, and a kitchen that turns orders around fast.

Google reviewers give the Dartmouth shop a 4.6 rating across more than two hundred reviews, praising the portion sizes and speed; Facebook reviewers rate it higher still at 4.8. The shop's own wall notices are candid about the trade-offs of a sell-out model: hours can end early when food runs out, last orders are taken fifteen minutes before closing, and reservations are not accepted β€” a five percent cash discount rewards diners who come prepared. Specials rotate weekly and catering is a growing side of the business, from office lunches to family events.
