Features & Highlights
Detailed Information
R&B Kitchen is a home-style Caribbean and soul-food kitchen in Westphal, on Dartmouth's Main Street, that has turned a simple idea ("let's sell plates") into one of the Halifax region's most decorated small restaurants. Co-founders Nevell Provo and Raemiah Dorrington opened in February 2020, one month before COVID-19 reached Nova Scotia, and grew anyway, moving from an expected 20-30 plates a day to serving up to 150 daily at their busiest. The restaurant runs on a daily-special format borrowed from Dorrington's home kitchen: one or two dishes a day, planned a week or two ahead, announced on Instagram, and sold out when the pots are empty. It is the rare restaurant where checking the feed is the menu. For the rest of the city's best tables, see our Halifax Dining Guide.
The name is the brand: R&B music and soul food, together. The dining room, an unassuming family-run order-at-the-counter spot, plays 90s R&B, and the kitchen's "R&B Kitchen Radio" bit carries the theme onto the website. What has put R&B on the map is the food itself and the community that grew around it: gold winner for Best Caribbean Restaurant in The Coast's 2026 Best of Halifax Readers' Choice Awards after years on the podium, a spot in The Coast's guide to Halifax's African-heritage food destinations, and a Facebook following past ten thousand.
Oxtail Fridays, Jerk Tuesdays and the Daily Plate
The format is the thing to understand before you go. Rather than a long static menu, R&B plans each day's plate one to two weeks out and posts it to Instagram (@rnbkitchen902): the day might be oxtail, rasta pasta, jerk chicken, BBQ ribs, fried chicken or a curveball like sweet chili shrimp. Regulars follow the feed and order on the days they love; "Oxtail Friday is our busiest day," Provo told The Coast in 2020. "We didn't know if it was because it was Friday or because it was the oxtail" β so they never risked finding out by changing it. The website now also lists the core plates: oxtail with rice and peas, coleslaw and cornbread at $22.99, signature jerk chicken at $18.99, rasta pasta with jerk breast at $21.49, smoked BBQ ribs at $20.99, and fried chicken with mac and cheese and candied yams at $19.99. Sides of mac and cheese and the cornbread draw particular praise from reviewers.
What a Decade of Awards and Reviewers Say
- The Coast's readers, repeatedly: Gold, Best Caribbean Restaurant, Best of Halifax 2026, after multiple years as a podium finisher in the same category. The Coast's own write-up of the kitchen calls the food "home-style Caribbean and soul food meals with dishes like oxtail, jerk chicken and BBQ ribs [that] will have your mouth watering."
- The plates themselves: Google reviewers rate the kitchen 4.7, and the recurring language is about generosity and seasoning: juicy, well-spiced chicken, flavourful ribs, rich mac and cheese. One Google reviewer's summary, quoted on review aggregators: "Felt like Sunday dinner at my auntie's house β but with the best playlist in the city. The oxtail is unreal."
- The community: 1,194 check-ins and more than 10,000 followers on Facebook; The Coast's African-heritage dining guide lists R&B as a marquee stop alongside Mary's African Cuisine.
The Honest Trade-Offs
The daily-special model is the charm and the catch. If you arrive set on a specific dish and it isn't that dish's day, you're eating the plate they're serving β call ahead or check the feed. Reviewers also flag two practical frictions: some find portion sizes modest relative to price for the newer plated menu, and peak-hour waits can run long for pickup orders since everything is cooked fresh in a small kitchen. The room is strictly functional β this is a takeout-and-delivery operation with a small dining area, not a date-night destination β and it closes early by restaurant standards (6 p.m. most weekdays, 8 p.m. Fridays in the latest posted hours), which is standard for soul-food kitchens that sell out. None of this has dented its standing; the kitchen rewards planning fifteen minutes ahead.
