Features & Highlights
Detailed Information
Tako Sushi & Ramen is a neighbourhood Japanese restaurant tucked into the Glenbourne Plaza at 480 Parkland Drive in Clayton Park, serving sushi, sashimi, ramen bowls, donburi and bento since 2013. It is the rare suburban strip-mall restaurant that beats the downtown core on hardware: The Coast's readers named it Gold Winner, Best Clayton Park Area Restaurant, a category it had already taken Silver in back when the category was harder to lose, and its room fills with regulars from the surrounding Clayton Park West streets. Google's editorial summary calls it a "casual, upbeat locale with sushi bar seats offering clever maki & Japanese kitchen entrees," which is an accurate compression of why people make the drive. For the downtown picture, see our Halifax Dining Guide.
The dining room is bright and simple: booths along the walls, a row of tables down the middle, and a sushi bar where the chef works in view of the room. The Coast's reviewer, visiting in 2014, noticed the "transparent decals with pretty photos of food" catching the afternoon light, a small detail that has not changed because the room has not needed to. What has changed is the attention: a restaurant that once hid in "inconvenient geography," as that same review put it, is now the anchor of a Parkland Drive strip that includes some of the city's most-loved hidden gems.
The Menu: Sprawling, Cheap by Downtown Standards, and Built on Freshness
- The maki list: Special rolls run $17β$20 β the Ninja Roll at $17.28, the Hot Pepper Roll at $17.82, the Umi Roll at $19.98 β alongside simpler classics in the $9β$12 range.
- The combos: This is where the value sits. The Assorted Maki Combo is $28.03, the Kaisen Sushi Combo $34.51, the Tako One Combo $46.39, and the deluxe Tako Two Combo $57.19 β enough for two to leave full.
- The ramen: The Hokkaido ramen was the standout of The Coast's 2014 visit: a pork bone broth seasoned with miso, "an almost creamy feel," served in a huge black bowl with a wooden ladle.
- The signature roll: The Gold Dragon Roll ($12.95 at the time of The Coast's 2014 visit, $18.36 for eight pieces today) wrapped in pink mamenori instead of nori: "packed with flavour," smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado and tempura shrimp.
- The kitchen dishes: Donburi, curries and bento round out the menu, so the one sushi-averse member of your party still eats well.
Why Clayton Park Keeps Voting for It
The Coast's Best of Halifax readers have returned Tako to the Clayton Park podium repeatedly, Silver in the late 2010s behind Mezza and Gold in the most recent cycle, ahead of the Lacewood Drive chains. The paper's citation credits "classic favourites and unique new sushi creations" served to the Halifax community since 2013. The praise that repeats across reviews is freshness: fish cut to order at the bar, and portions generous enough that the combos are widely recommended over Γ la carte ordering.
Service gets consistent positive mention β the kind of charming, personal attention a family-run room produces. When The Coast's reviewer visited, the server steered them to the gold dragon roll and the Hokkaido ramen unprompted, and both picks landed. That is the normal experience here rather than the exception: staff who know the menu well enough to build your order for you.
The Trade-Offs: Location, Rush Timing and Noise
Be honest about what Tako is not. It is not downtown β you will need a car or the Parkland Drive bus, and the plaza parking lot is unglamorous. It is not quiet at peak: the room fills at lunch and early dinner, and the hard surfaces carry sound. And it is not a splurge-occasion room; this is weekly-rotation dining, booths and fluorescent light, which is precisely why the prices read as they do. Diners who arrive expecting a downtown sushi lounge sometimes mark the ambience down; diners who arrive expecting excellent fish at suburban prices rarely do.
One practical note: the kitchen closes at 8 p.m. (Sundays it opens at noon), and the early-evening window (5β6:30 p.m.) is the calmest time to eat. The sushi bar seats are the best seats in the room if you enjoy watching the work.
