Halifax Central Library

Since opening in 2014, Halifax Central Library has changed how the city uses its downtown: five glass boxes stacked and offset above Spring Garden Road, designed by Danish firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen, with cantilevered floors that shift as they rise and a central atrium that carries daylight from the top of the building down to street level. It has become one of Halifax's most-visited free attractions, holding a 4.8-star Google rating across more than 1,100 reviews. Haligonians treat the building as a living room: reading floors, technology and media labs, community meeting rooms, and a rooftop terrace looking over the harbour.

  • Hours: The library is open Monday through Wednesday 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Thursday 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Friday and Saturday 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Note that it will be closed on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, for KANA'TA: Canada Day, and on September 30 for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Cost: General admission is completely FREE. There are no tickets or fees required to enter, use the Wi-Fi, access public computers, or attend most programs.
  • Parking & Transit: Paid parking is available on-site, including an electric vehicle charging station and bicycle racks. The location is also well-served by Halifax Transit buses.
