Features & Highlights
Detailed Information
Sand Dollar Cottage is a Cape Cod–style seaside cottage in Rose Bay, on Nova Scotia's South Shore, sleeping six across four bedrooms and sitting steps from the beach that gives it its name. Managed by Blue Rabbit Rentals, it carries a 4.8-star Google rating and a loyal repeat clientele, and its location — a quiet coastal hamlet fifteen minutes from UNESCO-listed Lunenburg — puts it in the sweet spot of the South Shore: close enough to the region's marquee town for dinners and sightseeing, far enough from it to hear the water at night. For the fuller picture of the area, start with our Lunenburg guide and the South Shore travel guide.
The cottage is roomy in a way most vacation rentals in this price band are not: four proper bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a common space that genuinely fits six. One bedroom has two steps down into the room, and one bathroom is a step-in with safety bars — thoughtful touches for older guests that few rental owners bother to document, let alone install. Linens and beach towels are included, so you are not choosing between packing space and towels for the sand. The house is a classic Cape Cod in profile — steep rooflines, dormers, a porch oriented to the water — and the interiors are the comfortable, slightly well-worn coastal style you want in a beach house: nothing precious, everything functional. Mornings here follow the tide: coffee facing the water, then beachcombing on the sand flats while the day warms up.
The Location: Rose Bay, Riverport and Lunenburg
Rose Bay is a fishing community on the province's scenic Lighthouse Route, and the cottage's position on Highway 332 gives it direct access to the shoreline. Beachcombing on Sand Dollar Beach starts at the front door — at low tide the sand flats here run out for hundreds of metres, and the beachcombing that names the cottage is a daily ritual rather than an activity you drive to. The Rose Bay General Store & Bistro is within walking distance for coffee, breakfast and the sort of provisions (milk, wine, bait, gossip) that a village store exists for; our full write-up of it is here. Historic Riverport is a few minutes down the road, and the sea caves and hiking at the Ovens area are a short drive southwest.
The big draw, though, is proximity: fifteen minutes to Lunenburg, with its working waterfront, the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, and some of the best restaurants in Atlantic Canada. Twenty minutes the other way brings you to Hirtle's Beach and the Gaff Point trail — one of the province's great coastal walks — plus the surf and white sand that make Kingsburg a destination of its own. Caving, cycling, golf, sea kayaking and whale watching are all bookable along this stretch of the coast, and the South Shore's farmers' markets, wineries and distilleries fill the food side of the week. In late autumn, the Lunenburg Documentary Film Festival extends the season well into November — the cottage's owners point to it by name — which makes October and November stays better value than you might expect.
Booking, Rates and House Rules
The cottage is booked by the week in season, with monthly stays possible in the shoulder months — a structure that suits itinerant travellers less and slow-travelling families more. Tourism Nova Scotia lists weekly rates in the $2,500–$3,500 range depending on season; a $100 administration fee applies, and cancellations are accepted up to 30 days before arrival, with the fee retained. Bookings and enquiries run through sanddollarns.ca or bluerabbitns@gmail.com; there is no published phone line, which is normal for a single-property rental but means you should confirm check-in logistics by email a few days out.
Weekly Bookings and Highway-Side Realities
The trade-offs here are the standard ones for a rural oceanfront rental. The address is on a highway — Highway 332 is the coastal route through Rose Bay — so expect occasional traffic sound and plan to keep children supervised on the road side of the property. Weekly-only summer booking means a minimum commitment of seven nights at peak rates — a significant outlay — and July and August Saturdays go early, often a year ahead for repeat guests. There is no on-site host: this is self-check-in cottage country, and anything that breaks stays broken until Blue Rabbit can get someone out. The nearest full grocery store is in Lunenburg, so arrive provisioned. None of this is unusual for the South Shore cottage market — and the four-bedroom, two-bathroom layout at this price point, this close to both Hirtle's Beach and Lunenburg, is genuinely hard to replicate.
