The Knot Pub: Lunenburg's Neighbourhood Local
Tucked into 4 Dufferin Street, steps from the harbour-front lanes of Old Town Lunenburg, The Knot Pub is the kind of unpretentious, owner-run pub every heritage town wishes it had. The building's historic bones (thick stone walls, timber beams, dining rooms lined with copper sheathing) give it a warmth that newer spots spend fortunes trying to fake, and the service has the easy, chatty rhythm of a bar where half the room knows the server by name.
The kitchen is firmly in the Nova Scotia comfort canon. The seafood chowder is the headline act, rich and generously loaded with local fish, and the single most recommended bowl in town. It is backed by a crisp battered fish and chips and a lobster roll with a serious 6 oz of meat. There is usually a proper lobster poutine or a curry on the specials board, and the frying is the old-school kind: golden, heavy, unapologetic. Portions are generous even by pub standards, and the pricing stays on the right side of reasonable for a UNESCO-listed tourist town.
Behind the bar, the tap list leans local (Garrison, Big Spruce, and other Nova Scotia craft breweries) alongside the standard pub pours, a short wine list, and a whisky shelf that suits a rainy South Shore evening. It works equally well as a lunch stop mid-way through the UNESCO Old Town walking loop, a dinner base before a waterfront stroll, or a last pint after the day-trippers have headed back to Halifax.
The pub has had its scrapes. A small electrical explosion temporarily shut the kitchen in the spring of 2022, and the doors reopened to a relieved town within weeks. Through the 2020s it has remained one of Lunenburg's most dependable reservations-free dinners. Arrive early in July and August or expect a short wait for a booth.
