Ski Wentworth

Ski Wentworth is Nova Scotia's largest and best-loved ski area, set into the Wentworth Valley in the Cobequid Mountains roughly two hours from Halifax and a short drive from the New Brunswick border. Two chairlifts serve a surprising amount of vertical for a Maritime hill — more than 800 vertical feet — with terrain that runs from a long, gentle beginner slope to steep, bumped-up runs that hosted the alpine and freestyle events at the 2011 Canada Winter Games. More than ninety years of skiing have given the hill a deep local following: it is the kind of place where families have skied for three generations and the cafeteria staff know the regulars by name. Winter on the hill

The winter season typically runs from mid-December through late March, weather and snowmaking permitting. Wentworth leans hard on snowmaking — the bulk of the main runs are covered by guns — so the hill can open and stay open even in thin natural-snow years. Night skiing runs several evenings a week under the lights, the terrain park is a fixture for freestyle skiers and snowboarders, and the snow school offers everything from first-timer discover packages to private coaching. Rentals are full-service (skis, snowboards, helmets, and snowshoes), so you can show up with nothing but warm layers. Crowds peak on weekends and through the March break; weekday mornings are the quietest and best value for families.

Summer and fall at the mountain

When the snow melts, the hill flips. Bikewentworth turns the lifts over to mountain bikes, serving a growing network of flow and technical trails that have made the valley one of the East Coast's stronger bike-park destinations, with rental bikes and protective gear available on site. Hiking trails climb to the ridgeline for valley views, and the access roads connect to backcountry cross-country ski routes that double as summer forest walks. In early October the Wentworth Valley is one of the inland bright spots for fall colour — the hardwoods on the hillside turn before the coastal routes do, which makes a clear day in early October an excellent reason to drive up.

Planning your visit

Ski Wentworth is on Highway 4 in the community of Wentworth, about 30 minutes from Amherst and 15 minutes from the Wentworth Valley road junction. Lift tickets, season passes, and lesson bookings are sold online in advance, usually at a discount over the walk-up window, and the website posts a live conditions report through the season. The base lodge has a cafeteria and bar, a rental shop, and a snow school desk; allow a solid half-day for a first visit. Call ahead or check the website for current hours — opening times shift with the weather through both the ski and bike seasons.
