The Shelburne taproom pours the full Boxing Rock lineup — including the award-winning Vicar's Cross Double IPA and the ever-popular Hunky Dory Pale Ale — alongside a kitchen menu, coffee and espresso drinks, desserts, and non-alcoholic options, making it a genuine day-time destination rather than a beer-only stop. The brewery's name comes from a real landmark and a real legend. According to local folklore, Boxing Rock — a small island at the mouth of Shelburne Harbour — was where sea captains of old set down quarrelling crew members with a simple choice: shake hands and share a beer, or box until only one could return to the ship. The captain would sail away and return before high tide to pick up one or both. Sometimes fists flew; sometimes the pair sat down, shared a jug of beer, and came back friends. Boxing Rock the brewery was built on that second outcome, and the philosophy still shows in the taproom's easy, welcoming atmosphere.

Around Shelburne: Birchtown and the Waterfront

Boxing Rock sits at the heart of one of Nova Scotia's most historic waterfronts. Shelburne's restored waterfront district is a short stroll away, and the brewery is a natural launch point for exploring the town's 18th-century shipbuilding heritage. The most meaningful nearby stop is the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre in Birchtown, minutes from the taproom, which tells the story of the roughly 3,000 Black Loyalists who arrived at Birchtown Bay in 1783 — at its peak the largest free Black community in British North America. Boxing Rock's Taste of Birchtown experience combines a guided tour of the centre and its walking trail with a craft beer tasting flight featuring the Back to Birchtown collaboration brew, pairing two of the South Shore's most compelling stories in a single afternoon. Farther afield, the brewery is an easy add-on to a day at Ovens Natural Park or a drive along the Lighthouse Route toward Liverpool and the Kejimkujik National Park Seaside.

Address & Location — 218 Water Street, Shelburne, NS B0T 1W0. The taproom is on the main waterfront street in downtown Shelburne, a short walk from the harbour boardwalk and the Shelburne County Museum. Free street parking is available on Water Street and the surrounding blocks.

Hours — Sunday to Thursday, 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM; Friday and Saturday, 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The Halifax retail location at 2790 Windsor Street (co-located with Local Source Market) has separate hours and offers growler fills, small-batch brews, and retail sales.

Price Range — Flights, pints, and retail cans and bottles are priced in line with Nova Scotia craft beer standards; food is pub-style and reasonably priced. The Tasting Room Experience and Axe Throwing Experience are private bookings that include beer and food and are priced per group (additional guests beyond the base group join for $30 per person).

Getting There — Shelburne is about two hours southwest of Halifax on Highway 103. Boxing Rock is a natural stop on a South Shore loop that takes in Lunenburg, Liverpool, and the Shelburne waterfront, and it is one of the most easterly stops on the Good Cheer Trail's South Shore route.
