Quick Facts
About ICF Junior & U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships
The ICF Junior & U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships come to Dartmouth's world-renowned Lake Banook in 2026, bringing together the world's top young paddlers for five days of intense competition. Lake Banook is considered one of the best sprint canoe courses in the world, having previously hosted the 2009 World Championships and the 2022 ICF Canoe Sprint Super Cup.
Athletes from over 70 countries will compete in canoe and kayak events across multiple distances, racing on a course that offers spectators stunning views of the lake surrounded by Dartmouth's tree-lined shores. This Olympic-qualifying event is a critical stepping stone for athletes aiming for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The spectator experience includes grandstand seating along the finish line, a festival zone with food and cultural displays, and opportunities to meet athletes. Dartmouth's downtown restaurants and shops will be buzzing throughout the championships, and the ferry ride from Halifax to Dartmouth adds a charming maritime touch to the spectator journey.
Getting there & around: Spectator access is affected by road closures around Lake Banook throughout the event. Banook Avenue is closed from June 22 to July 6, and Prince Albert Road is closed from June 30 to July 6. Parking restrictions are in effect on Hawthorne, Nowlan, and Elliot streets, and four lakeside parks are closed to the public. Halifax Transit Route 370 is on detour from June 30 to July 3 β check Halifax Transit for current routing. The best way to arrive is by ferry from Halifax to the Alderney Ferry Terminal in downtown Dartmouth, then walk ~10 minutes to the venue. Arrive early; grandstand seating and nearby parking fill quickly.
