Nova Scotia Golf Guide

Two Golf Digest World Top 100 courses on one Cape Breton headland, plus Stanley Thompson's wilderness classic, a luxury resort, and the country's best par-3 short course.

Updated July 2026 Β· Rates verified July 2026

Nova Scotia is a serious golf destination hiding in plain sight. On a single headland in Inverness, Cabot Cape Breton holds two of the Golf Digest World's 100 Greatest Courses (2026-27) - Cabot Cliffs at #14 and Cabot Links at #25 - making it one of only a handful of destinations worldwide with multiple World Top 100 layouts. Add Stanley Thompson's 1941 Highlands Links inside a national park, the luxury Fox Harb'r Resort, the McBroom-designed Bell Bay above Bras d'Or Lake, and the affordable Dundee Resort, and you have a complete trip that does not require a single connecting flight.

Why Nova Scotia for Golf

Two World Top 100 courses

Cabot Cape Breton is one of only about five destinations worldwide with multiple courses in the Golf Digest World Top 100. Cabot Cliffs sits at #14 (2026-27) and is widely ranked the #1 course in Canada; Cabot Links is #25.

True links golf

Cabot Links is Canada's first true links course, built on sandy linksland with firm, fast-running fescue and minimal irrigation. The clifftop Cabot Cliffs and the Northumberland Shore Fox Harb'r round out a varied, walkable golf menu.

Strong value off the peak

Highland Links delivers a Stanley Thompson World-Top-100 pedigree for roughly $100-$130, and Dundee Resort for an estimated $60-$90. Cabot's shoulder-season rates drop to $220 Mon-Thu, and The Nest par-3 is an $80 flat rate all season.

Profiles run roughly west-to-east across Cape Breton, finishing on the Northumberland Shore. Each card lists the architect, par and yardage, the verified 2026 peak green fee, and the booking rules that actually matter.

Cabot Cliffs

Golf Digest World #14 (2026-27)

Peak fee $450 CAD (~$329 USD) peak

The highest-ranked course in Canada and the reason golfers cross the Atlantic for Cape Breton. Coore and Crenshaw routed six par-5s and six par-3s across sand dunes, ocean cliffs, and a pine-lined stretch that recalls the Scottish Highlands. The par-3 16th plays over a roughly 100-foot drop to a green on the cliff edge - one of the most photographed holes in the game.

Best Time to Play

Most Cape Breton and Northumberland courses operate mid-May to late October. Peak season is late June through mid-September, when conditions are firmest and fees are highest.

Mid-May - early June Shoulder

Lower fees, quieter tee sheets, and cooler weather. Cabot early/late rate drops to $220 Mon-Thu. Courses may be soft after winter.

Late June - mid-September Peak

Prime conditions and the highest fees ($450 at Cabot). Book resort packages months ahead. Days are long; twilight rates kick in after 3-4pm.

Late September - October Late season

Fall color on the Cabot Trail overlaps with cooler, firm conditions. Rates ease; Highland Links and The Nest are at their best.

Pairing tip: late September and October overlap with Cabot Trail fall color, so a golf trip doubles as a foliage drive - and shoulder rates ease just as the courses firm up.

Booking Strategy

Cabot - day guests vs. resort guests

Day (non-resort) guests can book Cabot Links, Cabot Cliffs, and The Nest up to 14 days before the desired tee time. Resort guests book through stay-and-play packages and get earlier access, which is why July and August prime times disappear first. For a specific summer date, either reserve a package months ahead or work the 14-day window the moment it opens.

Replays and cancellations

Same-day replay rates are available after your first round at Cabot; weekend and mid/peak-season replays open no earlier than 40 days prior. Golf cancellations need 48 hours' notice. Cabot accommodation takes a 50% deposit at booking and becomes fully non-refundable inside 60 days.

Fox Harb'r and the public courses

Fox Harb'r tee times book online or at 1-866-257-1801, with public play welcome and stay-and-play packages available. Bell Bay books through Chronogolf with no resort-stay requirement. Highland Links books online or through the pro shop. Dundee's single-round rate is not published online - call (902) 345-2649.

Caddies and walking

The Cabot courses are walking-only with no motorized carts, so a caddie is the upgrade worth budgeting for - especially at Cabot Cliffs, where the routing and elevation are best read by someone who has. Fox Harb'r includes a shared cart; Bell Bay and Highland Links offer carts and club rental for a fee.

Where to Stay

Cabot Cape Breton (Inverness)

Hotel rooms through 5-bedroom villas on property. The clean way to guarantee prime Cabot tee times and walk to both championship courses. On-site spa, Cabot Public House, and Panorama dining.

Fox Harb'r Resort (Wallace)

1,100-acre luxury resort on the Northumberland Shore with spa, marina, winery, and a $25/night resort fee covering amenities. The natural base for a Fox Harb'r-only long weekend on the drive up from Halifax.

Baddeck

Inverary Resort, waterfront inns, and B&Bs two minutes from Bell Bay. Baddeck is also the classic Cabot Trail gateway, so it pairs golf with the rest of a Cape Breton trip.

Ingonish & Dundee

Keltic Lodge area near Highland Links for the national-park round; Dundee Resort (West Bay) for lakefront cottages and the budget-friendly end of the golf corridor. Both suit multi-generational groups where not everyone plays.

For Non-Golfers

Every resort on this list has enough off-course activity that a non-golfing partner will not be waiting in the parking lot.

  • Cabot Cape Breton: luxury spa, Cabot Public House and Panorama dining, beach access, hiking trails, and boutique shopping.
  • Fox Harb'r: full spa, marina and yacht cruises, winery, hunting lodge, hydro-wellness centre, pools, pickleball and tennis, and cruiser bikes.
  • Dundee Resort: lakefront cottages, indoor and outdoor pools, spa, children's playground, lake activities, and Fortress of Louisbourg within reach.
  • Highland Links / Ingonish: the whole of Cape Breton Highlands National Park - hiking, wildlife, scenic drives, and beaches - is on the same site as the course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to stay at the Cabot resort to play Cabot Cliffs or Cabot Links?
No. Non-resort (day) guests can book either Cabot championship course up to 14 days before the desired tee time. Resort guests get earlier access through stay-and-play packages, which is why July and August prime times fill fastest with package holders. If you want a specific July or August date and you are not staying on property, set a calendar reminder for the 14-day window.
What is the difference between Cabot Cliffs and Cabot Links?
Cabot Cliffs (2026-27 Golf Digest World #14) is the Coore and Crenshaw clifftop design with six par-5s and six par-3s, dramatic elevation change, and the famous par-3 16th over a cliff drop. Cabot Links (World #25) is Rod Whitman's 2012 layout and Canada's first true links course, built on flat linksland with five holes along the beach. Both are walking-only with no carts. Most visiting golfers play both over consecutive days.
Are golf carts included in the green fee?
It varies by course. Fox Harb'r includes a shared power cart, practice facility, lockers, and club cleaning in its fee. Bell Bay charges extra for a cart ($25 for 18 holes, $15 for 9). The Cabot courses (Links, Cliffs, and The Nest) are walking-only with no motorized carts at all - a caddie is the upgrade to budget for. Highland Links is a walking course with carts and clubs available to hire.
What is the cheapest way to play championship golf in Cape Breton?
Cape Breton Highlands Links (about $100-$130, including a Parks Canada day pass) and Dundee Resort (estimated $60-$90) are the value picks. Highland Links is a Stanley Thompson design historically ranked in the World Top 100, so it is cheap relative to its architectural pedigree rather than cheap in quality. For something short and affordable at Cabot, The Nest par-3 is an $80 flat rate and can be finished in 60 to 90 minutes.
When should I book a Nova Scotia golf trip?
Play runs roughly mid-May to late October, with peak season late June through mid-September. For July and August, book resort packages months ahead and watch the 14-day window for day-guest tee times at Cabot. September offers the best combination of firm conditions, easing rates, and Cabot Trail fall color. Always confirm current rates directly with each course before you book.
Can non-golfers enjoy these resorts too?
Yes. Cabot Cape Breton has a luxury spa, dining, beach access, and hiking. Fox Harb'r has a full spa, marina with yacht cruises, winery, pools, pickleball and tennis, and cruiser bikes. Dundee Resort has lakefront cottages, pools, a spa, and children's play areas. Around Highland Links, the whole of Cape Breton Highlands National Park - hiking, wildlife, and scenic drives - is right there.
