Quick Facts
History & Description
The Pictou Bar Lighthouse once stood at the end of the bar at the south entrance to Pictou Harbour on the Northumberland Shore. It was an octagonal wooden tower, roughly 55 feet tall, painted in red and white stripes, one of the most distinctive lights on the Sunrise Trail. The original tower dated to 1834, and its replacement, built in 1904, carried the station into the modern era.
The 1834 first tower held seven Argand lamps with a catadioptric lens and was tended by keeper Thomas Power. The 1904 replacement carried a 4th order dioptric fixed white lens and had its elevation raised from 50 to 60 feet in the early 1960s. Tragically, in 2004 the historic octagonal tower was completely destroyed by a fire of unknown origin, despite the valiant efforts of the local fire department, and the site no longer has a standing tower.
