Quick Facts
History & Description
The Pictou Island South End Lighthouse, built in 1907, stands on top of the bank near the island's wharf, overlooking the Northumberland Strait. It is a square, tapered, wooden lighthouse with a square lantern β the only surviving lighthouse of the three that originally stood on Pictou Island. The light is still standing and operational, and was designated a heritage lighthouse in February 2015 under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act.
The 26-foot tower originally carried a fixed white sixth-order dioptric light and served as a wharf light and range light for traffic to and from the island's only wharf. Between 1951 and 1974 it served as the rear light of a navigation range. Today the automated beacon is maintained by the Canadian Coast Guard. Reached by the small ferry from Caribou, the lighthouse is one of the first buildings greeting visitors as they disembark, a cherished landmark for the island's small year-round community.
