Quick Facts
History & Description
The Pictou Harbour Rear Range Light works in line with the 1889 front tower to mark the dredged channel into Pictou Harbour. It is a smaller square wooden tower, about 12 feet tall, painted white and set back from the waterfront so that the two lights align for mariners approaching from the Northumberland Strait. The pairing is a classic Nova Scotia range system, still in use today.
Built in the same 1889 programme as the front light, the rear tower saw alterations in 1896 and 1909 and was automated by 1965. It remains standing and operational, guiding fishing boats, the PEI ferry traffic and pleasure craft that call on Pictou. Visitors touring the Sunrise Trail can view both range lights from the harbour roads near downtown Pictou.
